Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first book in the Bible isn't usually written as GNSS. What is its more familiar title?

Answer: Genesis

The word genesis means a coming into being, and that is exactly where Genesis starts, with the world coming into being. In this book you will also find the story of Cain killing Abel, Noah and his family surviving the deluge in an ark, and God's covenant with Abraham, whose descendants populate most of the rest of the Old Testament.
2. What is the proper name of the Biblical book that tells about a Moabite woman, ancestress of Jesus according to the Gospel of Matthew? Without its vowels, it looks like RTH.

Answer: Ruth

The book of Ruth includes a passage that is very popular at weddings, "whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people [shall be] my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, [if aught] but death part thee and me." (Ruth 1: 16-17, KJV) These words were actually spoken to Naomi, her mother-in-lsw, which makes them sound a bit strange when exchanged in a wedding ceremony! Ruth married Boaz, a kinsman of the first husband who had died, and their story is the heart of this brief book.

Their son was named Obed, and he was the grandfather of King David.
3. The book of FRST SML includes the story of David's victory over Goliath. What is its name with vowels in place?

Answer: First Samuel

Samuel was a prophet who annointed the first king of Israel, Saul, despite his belief that the people should not have a king, but consider themselves ruled by God. The two books of Samuel cover the historical events leading to the reigns of Saul and, subsequently, David. The books of Kings, which follow, cover the death of David and the kingship of Solomon.
4. The trials and tribulations of JB are legendary. What is the proper name of the book about him?

Answer: JOB

Job was the unfortunate subject of a bit of a wager between God and Satan as to whether faith could be sustained in the face of adversity. Job lost everything, including his possessions, his family and his health, but remained faithful. His faith was rewarded by the restoration of health and the replacement of what had been lost.
5. The words of many Old Testament prophets are interpreted by Christians as presaging the coming of Jesus. This is especially true of the book of SH, one of the Major Prophets. What is his name when written with the vowels included?

Answer: Isaiah

Many Christmas pageants include passages from Isaiah, who is believed to have predicted the coming of Christ (although Jewish scholars consider that the Messiah to whom he refers was entirely different). Isaiah is quoted a number of times in the New Testament, both if the Gospels and in the Epistles. John the Baptist is frequently associated with Isaiah 40:3 (KJV), "The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God."
6. Which of the gospels, written by an author whose name contains the consonants LK, has the fullest description of the birth of Jesus?

Answer: Luke

If you try to list the facts we can find about the birth of Jesus in the Bible, you will find that almost all of them come from the Gospel of Luke. Matthew has some, but Mark starts with John the Baptist (and a reference to Isaiah), and John likewise starts with an adult Jesus. Luke starts with the Annunciation to Mary that she will have a child, and includes the census, the trip to Bethlehem, the shepherds hearing the news from an angel, and their visit to see the babe in a manger.
7. One of the most popular passages in the New Testament, called "The Love Chapter" is found in what book, the consonants of whose name are FRST CRNTHNS?

Answer: First Corinthians

1 Corinthians 13 is all about love, and many people who know little of the Bible will have heard it somewhere (often in a wedding). My high school had us reciting it antiphonally as part of the graduation ceremony, but we seemed to be emphasising the bit about "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (1 Corinthians 13:11-12, KJV) Paul wrote the epistle to the church at Corinth to try and settle disputes there that were threatening the unity of the community of believers.
8. The second book of the Old Testament tells of Moses leading the Hebrews out of Egypt, an act reflected in what title, which is a bit longer than XDS when its vowels are restored?

Answer: Exodus

The word exodus means going out or leaving, and the book of Exodus is mostly centered on Moses, and the journey on which he led the Hebrews from Egypt towards the region we now know as Israel, which they called the Promised Land. Along the way Moses collects the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai.
9. PRVRBS is not the usual way of writing the name of a Biblical book full of wise sayings. What is?

Answer: Proverbs

The book of Proverbs is full of sage advice, as its name suggests. Part of the Wisdom section of the Old Testament, these sayings all tend to reinforce the idea that submission to God's will is the first step towards gaining wisdom. Some of them are the kind of short and pointed saying that we would usually associate with the term proverb, but some are much longer and complex.
10. What is the name of the last book of the New Testament, which appears to be BK F RVLTN when the vowels have been removed?

Answer: Book of Revelation

Also called the Revelation to John or the Apocalypse of John, this is one of the most complex and puzzling books of the Bible. It starts as a letter, then moves on to describe a series of prophetic visions relating to the end of times. The imagery is vivid, but not precise, leaving room for a wide range of interpretations as to what it "means".

Some believe it is symbolic of the journey of faith that all must follow, while others believe that it describes actual physical events (either in the past or in the imminent future or in the distant future, depending on who you ask).
