Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fill in the blank according to Job 18:5 in the King James Version (KJV). "Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the ______ of his fire shall not shine."

Answer: Spark

Job Chapter 18 verse 5 (KJV) says: "Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine."

Bildad, Job's friend and counselor, has had just about all of Job's whining and complaining that he can stomach. He gives Job a thorough tongue lashing in chapter 18. Bildad even resorts to calling Job "wicked", and alludes to his future downfalls. The maxim, "with friends like this, who needs enemies", is so apropos to this chapter of Job. Job's friends have reached the point where they must see themselves as being in an AA meeting, yet Job not standing and saying, my name is Job and I'm and alcoholic.
2. God made the land of Edom a burning tar pit; according to Isaiah 34:9-10 KJV, what shall go up from Edom for ever?

Answer: The smoke

Isaiah 34:9-10 (KJV) says: "And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever."

Consider the proverb "Stand still and let God fight your battles," and the verse "Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord." Both of those are applicable to these verses. The city of Edom has been made to pay a terrible price, an eternal price. I wonder if they knew that it went back to the time when the Edomites denied the Israelites passage through their city as they made their way to Canaan in Numbers 20:21. God avenged His Children by causing the city of Edom to become a mere burning pitch (tar) pit that could not be put out. It shall render smoke always, the Bible says; and none shall be able to pass through Edom ever again.
3. According to Exodus 35:3 (KJV), God commanded that all the children of Israel were to start a fire on the Sabbath.

Answer: False

Exodus 35:3 (KJV) says: "Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day."

This chapter continues the previous one as Moses has come down from Mount Sinai with the newly hewn tablets upon which the Lord has written the "Ten Commandments". The Sabbath was the Lord's Day, a day of rest; anyone starting a fire was doing work, and would be put to death.
4. According to Jeremiah 36:22 (KJV), place the correct numerical month in the blank. "Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the _____ month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him."

Answer: Ninth

Jeremiah 36:22 (KJV) reads: "Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him."

The ninth Hebrew calendar month (Kislev, Chisleu, Chislev, Cisieu) is equivalent to November - December. A winterhouse is a designated room in the main house and is heated by a cauldron, pot, or brazier burning coals.

Why did leaders think they were above the law, even the law of the Lord? King Jehoiakim, hearing the words of the prophet Jeremiah, paid them no heed. Indeed he mocked God by burning the scriptures sent to him. All those who served in his administration had previously heard the same words and feared them, but in the company of the puppet King Jehoiakim (who served under Nebuchadnezzar) they followed their leader. None of them feared the warnings of Jeremiah, because the king didn't show any fear. Jeremiah sent the king another copy of the prophecy, and added a dire prophecy just for him. The king would never sit an heir upon the throne thereafter. While Jehoiakim did have a son (Jehoiachin), he never ruled as king. Nebuchadnezzar, the true king who had appointed Jehoiakim to serve, immediately besieged the throne and took it from Jehoiachin. Jehoiakim's son went into exile and died there.
5. What father of Rehoboam goes in the blank from 2 Chronicles Chapter 7:1 (KJV)? "Now when _______ had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house."

Answer: Solomon

2 Chronicles 7:1 (KJV) reads: "Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house."

God had denied David the building of His Temple. He set that distinction to David's son Solomon. Upon completion of the Temple, Solomon offered a dedication prayer to God, and sacrifices were prepared and placed on the altar. Solomon, kneeling on a scaffold before the people, and God, prayed an emotional dedication, after which fire came down and consumed the sacrifices. The onlookers bowed face down attesting to the glory and goodness of God.
God assured Solomon that as long as His covenant with David was kept, David's heirs would forever be on the throne of Israel.
6. As David sings a song to God in Psalm 68:2 (KJV), what does he say "Melteth before the fire"?

Answer: Wax

Psalm 68:2 (KJV) says: "As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God."

The Bible shows that intentions do often go awry when one begins to have a little talk with God. Attributed to King David, the Psalm is meant to thank God for past victories and prayer for those to come; however, David goes into praise of God for His goodness, for the ways he made for him as king, and God's Children of Israel. God is mighty, David finds, and worthy to be praised.
7. According to Proverbs 16:27 (KJV), in what body part of an ungodly man is there something like a burning fire?

Answer: Lips

Proverbs 16:27 (KJV) says: "An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire."

Two proverbs are fitting here: "Idle hands are the devil's workshop" and "Loose lips, sink ships".

Author's note: See also Matthew 15:11 and 1 Peter 5:8 for more on this theme.
8. Is the verse in this question verbatim according to Isaiah 43:2 in the King James Version? "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame consume thee."

Answer: No

Isaiah 43:2 KJV actually reads: "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."

God brought the Israelites out of bondage, protected them as they journeyed day and night, and even provided food for them. He raised kings among them and gave them laws to live by. Christians believe that His deepest expression of love for His Children came in the form of Jesus Christ. This quotation from Isaiah is a beautiful expression of love.
9. In Numbers 11:1 (KJV), the people did which of the things below, which "displeased the Lord" and drew His anger?

Answer: Complained

Numbers 11:1 (KJV) says, "And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp."

If an imprisoned man is set free should he complain if all he has to eat is bread and water? Or, should he long for the comforts of the tiny cell that held him captive?

The Children of Israel were finally free of Egyptian captivity; however, they wandered and wandered in the desert and had only manna to eat. Some of the people were so ungrateful they had the unmitigated gall to complain and even say that they had it better in Egypt. When is captivity better than freedom? Talk about complacency. I can't imagine how angry this must have made God. But even in His anger the Bible tells us that God answered these prayers. The ingrates were given quail. "The Lord giveth, The Lord taketh away." He gave them quail until it was coming out of their nostrils. They had enough for fried quail, broiled quail, baked quail, quail bisque, quail croquettes, quail with manna, quail soup... you get the idea. However, seeing their lust for something other than what He provided (manna) angered God yet again, and he caused those who lusted to fall dead even while eating their quail fritters.

Numbers 11:34 (KJV) reads: "And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted."
10. What word goes in the blank according to Zechariah 2:5 (King James Version)? "For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the _______ in the midst of her."

Answer: Glory

Zechariah 2:5 KJV reads: "For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her."

Christianity teaches that Jerusalem isn't the only place where God provides unseen fences nor are the Children of Israel the only benefactors of such protection. And God's protection isn't always unseen; the Bible shows that often it's as plain as the nose on our face. While it was easy to see God's protection as a wall of fire in Zechariah, it wasn't so easy to see how he protected Joseph when his brothers sold him in Genesis.
