Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Genesis 1:1, the very first line in the Hebrew Bible as well as the Old Testament of the English Bible, what did God create first?

Answer: The heavens and the earth

According to Genesis 1:1 the heavens and the earth were the first things created by God. Here's how Genesis 1:1-5 reads in the NKJV: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day."
2. Apart from Eve, who is the first woman who is specifically named in Scripture, as per Genesis 4:19?

Answer: Adah

Adah is the first woman, apart from Eve, who is identified in Scripture. Zillah is a close second followed by Naamah. Both Adah and Zillah were married to Lamech. Genesis 4:19-22, in the NKJV, states: "Then Lamech took for himself two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. His brother's name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute. And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah."

This is the first mention in Scripture of a man having more than one wife.
3. The first mention of a person erecting a monument in memory of a person who died appears in Genesis 35:20. According to Scripture, Jacob erected the monument over the grave of his wife. What was the name of his deceased wife?

Answer: Rachel

Jacob erected the first monument in memory of his beloved wife Rachel. According to Scripture, Rachel died giving birth to her second son, Benjamin. Genesis 35:16-19 tells of Rachel's death and Jacob's tribute to her: "Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, 'Do not fear; you will have this son also.' And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin. So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day."

4. In the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, the first instance of a man buying a piece of land involves Abraham. According to Genesis 23:1-19, Abraham purchased the land as a burial site for his wife. What was his wife's name?

Answer: Sarah

Sarah is the correct answer. According to Genesis 23:1, she was one hundred and twenty-seven years old when she died "in Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan." Genesis 23:14 states Jacob bought a field from Ephron for four hundred shekels of silver.

Verses 19 and 20, in the NKJV, go on to state: "And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place."

5. According to Genesis 5:21-24 who was the first person in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, who was taken up to heaven without dying?

Answer: Enoch

Enoch is the correct answer. Genesis 5:21-24, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him." In other words, he did not die, but was taken away by God, similar to Elijah.

Incidentally, Hebrews 11:5-6, in the New Testament, has this to say about Enoch and his departure: "By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, 'and was not found, because God had taken him'; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

According to Wikipedia, Enoch means initiated, dedicated and disciplined.
6. According to Genesis 8:6-8 in the NKJV, what type of bird did Noah first release from the ark to determine if flood waters had started to recede?

Answer: Raven

The correct answer is raven. Genesis 8:6-9, in the NKJV, gives this account: "So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made. Then he sent out a raven, which kept going to and fro until the waters had dried up from the earth. He also sent out from himself a dove, to see if the waters had receded from the face of the ground. But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she returned into the ark to him, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her, and drew her into the ark to himself."

Notes from the NKJV Study Bible have this to say about the passage: "The flight of the raven was observed from the ark; this hardy bird kept flying until it was able to locate land. The more gentle bird, the dove, sought land; finding none this bird returned to the ark."

Scripture goes on to tell of Noah releasing the dove seven days later and it returning with an olive leaf in its beak. After waiting another seven days, he released the dove once again and it did not return to the ark.

7. Genesis 12:1-3 is the first account of God promising a man he would be the patriarch of a great nation. Who was the man?

Answer: Abram

Abram, who later became known as Abraham, is the correct answer. Genesis 12:1-3, in the NKJV, quotes the LORD as making the following promise to Abram:
"Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father's house,
To a land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

Similar promises were made pertaining to Ishmael in Genesis 17 and Jacob in Genesis 46.

8. In the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, what was the name of the first woman to be visited by an angel?

Answer: Hagar

Hagar is the correct answer. Her encounter with an angel is documented in Genesis 21:14-19. According to Scripture, Hagar was visited by an angel after she and her son Ishmael were ordered by Abraham to depart from his house.

The departure of Hagar and Ishmael is one of the better known stories in Genesis. Genesis 21:14, in the NKJV, states: "So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba."

At one point, Hagar was apparently afraid her son would die as verse 16 tells of her sobbing. Then a miracle happened.

Genesis 21:17-20 states: "And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, 'What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.' Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink. So God was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt."

9. Who was the first person in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, to give one-tenth all all he owned, as per Genesis 14:20?

Answer: Abraham

The correct answer is Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time. Genesis 14:18-20, in the NKJV, gives this account: "Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said:
'Blessed be Abram of God Most High,
Possessor of heaven and earth;
And blessed be God Most High,
Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.'
And he gave him a tithe of all."

10. In the book of Revelation, John of Patmos tells of a vision in which warnings were issued to seven different churches. (See Revelation 2 and 3.) The first of the seven churches mentioned is described in a subhead in the NKJV as "the loveless church." According to Revelation 2:1-7, where was the first church out of the seven based?

Answer: Ephesus

The loveless church, according to Revelation 2:1-7 was in Ephesus. The passage, in the NKJV, states: "'To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, 'These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: 'I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name's sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place -- unless you repent.

But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.'"
