Biblical Geography - Mapping Out The Events #1 Quiz

I love doing FunTrivia quizzes on the Bible and geography. So it only stands to reason I would eventually put the two subjects together and come up with a geography quiz based on events in the New Testament. (The NIV was used for this quiz.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John 2: 1-11 tells of Jesus performing his first miracle, turning water into wine at a wedding banquet. In what community did this miracle take place?

Answer: Cana

The correct answer is Cana. Verses 7 and 8 in the second chapter of John tell of Jesus instructing people to fill a number of jars with water and then to draw some out and give a sample to the master of the banquet. After tasting the liquid, the master expresses surprise at how fine the wine is.

In verse 10, the master compliments the bridegroom, stating "everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." According to the Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible, Cana was west of the Sea of Galilee and about 10 miles north of Nazareth.
2. Luke 24: 50-53 tells of Jesus ascending into heaven after his resurrection. In what town did the ascension take place?

Answer: Bethany

The correct answer is Bethany. Scripture states Jesus ascended into heaven while his disciples looked on. Luke 24: 50-53, in the NIV Bible, reports: "When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.

Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God." Bethany was a small community, just outside Jerusalem.
3. Mark 10: 46-52 tells of a blind beggar named Bartimaeus having his sight restored by Jesus. In what community did this miracle take place?

Answer: Jericho

The miraculous healing took place in Jericho. Jesus told Bartimaeus his sight had been restored because of his faith. Jericho is about 10 miles north of Dead Sea and near the Jordan River. Jericho is about 845 feet below sea level, making it one of the the lowest permanently inhabited communities in the world, according to Wikipedia.
4. Matthew was a tax collector who was also known as Levi. The calling of Levi as a disciple is recorded in Mark 2: 13-17 with verse 1 reporting about the location of Jesus at the time. Where did the calling of Matthew take place?

Answer: Capernaum

The correct answer is Capernaum. Just prior to the calling of Matthew, scripture in Mark tells of the healing of a paralytic man. Incidentally, tax collectors were despised because they were seen as traitors, working for the conquering Romans. What's more, they were accused of overcharging the people and keeping a portion of the taxes for themselves.

When Jesus selected Matthew as a disciple, many people, especially the church leaders of the day, were filled with disdain. Capernaum was a community on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

The once-thriving community is now a ruin.
5. The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist is recorded in Matthew 3: 13-17. Where did the baptism take place?

Answer: Jordan River

The correct answer is the Jordan River. Matthew 3: 13-17, in the NIV Bible, reports things this way: "Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, 'I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?' Jesus replied, 'Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.' Then John consented.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased'."
6. Acts 11: 26 tells of believers in Christ being called Christians for the first time in a particular community. Can you name it?

Answer: Antioch

The correct answer is Antioch, a community near the modern day city of Antakya in Turkey. Acts 11: 25-26, in the NIV Bible, reports: "Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch."
7. Acts 9: 1-31 tells of the conversion of Paul, known as Saul at the time, to Christianity. To what city was Paul travelling when he had his encounter with Christ on the road?

Answer: Damascus

Damascus is the correct answer. Acts 9: 3-6, in the NIV Bible, states: "As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' 'Who are you, Lord?' Saul asked. 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' he replied. 'Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do'." Damascus is in southwestern Syria and, according to Wikipedia, it is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.
8. In Matthew 16: 13-20, Jesus asks his disciples who they think he is and Peter responds by stating he "is the Christ, the Son of the living God." In what region does Peter make this declaration?

Answer: Caesarea Philippi

The correct answer is Caesarea Philippi. Here's how Matthew 16: 13-20, in the NIV Bible, reports what happened: "When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, 'Who do people say the Son of Man is?' They replied, 'Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' 'But what about you?' he asked. 'Who do you say I am?' Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.' Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ." Caesarea Philippi is about 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee, near Mount Hermon.
9. Mark 5:1-20 tells of Jesus healing a demon-possessed man known as Legion. In what region did this healing take place?

Answer: Gerasenes

Yes, Gerasenes is the correct answer. Scripture records the demons begged Jesus for permission to leave Legion and go into a nearby herd of pigs. When Jesus granted permission to the evil spirits to go into the pigs, the herd went wild and rushed down a steep bank into the lake.

The number of pigs that drowned is estimated at 2,000 in Mark 5: 13. According to the Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible, Gerasenes is east of the Sea of Galilee.
10. Luke 7: 11-17 tells of Jesus raising a widow's son from the dead. In what community did this miracle take place?

Answer: Nain

Nain is the correct answer. Incidentally, this is the only place in the entire Bible where Nain is mentioned. Luke 17: 11-15, in the NIV Bible, reports: "Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him.

As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out--the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, 'Don't cry.' Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still.

He said, 'Young man, I say to you, get up!' The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother." According to the Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible, Nain is about ten miles south of Nazareth.
