Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for ____ is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame." Which word completes this quote from the Song of Solomon?

Answer: love

This verse is Song of Solomon 8:6. As the title of the book suggests, King Solomon (Israel's third king) is believed to have written this. Alternate titles for the book are 'Song of Songs' and 'Canticles'.

This book is somewhat unique amongst the books of the Old Testament in that it makes no reference to the Law, nor does it refer directly to God. Instead, it is a celebration of love, and is largely sexual in its language.
2. "Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our ____." Which word completes this quote from the book of Romans?

Answer: sin

The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul, as agreed upon by most biblical scholars. According to Romans 1, Paul desired to go to Rome, but had been prevented, thus the impetus for writing to the church in Rome.

The quoted verse in the question is Romans 3:20, as Paul is in the midst of explaining how the Jewish understanding of sin and the expiation of sin is inadequate in light of the message of the gospel. The keeping of the law is inadequate for achieving righteousness... in fact the law only serves to highlight one's guilt for failing to do so.
3. "So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear ____, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him." Which word completes this quote from the book of Hebrews?

Answer: sin

This verse is Hebrews 9:28, wherein the author (there is no clear consensus on who the author of the book of Hebrews is) explains the power of the priesthood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. According to Christian interpretation, the entire chapter explains the Jewish tabernacle and its utensils and how they are fulfilled in Christ (as the ultimate sacrifice), according to God's plan.
4. "Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no ____, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless." Which word completes this quote from 1 Samuel?

Answer: good

When God's chosen people asked the prophet Samuel for God to give them a king to rule over them, rather than the current process of Judges and prophets, Samuel rebuked them for their sin. He showed them God's power by prophesying an off-season thunderstorm, which then promptly occurred.

The verse in the question is 1 Samuel 12:21, wherein Samuel is in the middle of urging the Jewish people not to turn away from God in favour of an earthly king, as well as idols that have no power.
5. "Lord God, do not reject your anointed one. Remember the great ____ promised to David your servant." Which word completes this quote from 2 Chronicles?

Answer: love

Following the completion of the Temple, King Solomon dedicates it to the Lord and prays a consecration prayer (2 Chronicles 6). In verse 42 he closes the chapter with a personal prayer to God, asking Him for favour as promised to his father David.
6. "In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned ____." What word completes this opening quote from the book of Job?

Answer: evil

The book of Job tells of a man who loves God and is blessed by God for it, until one day Satan challenges God that Job only loves him BECAUSE of his blessings, and would curse God if his fortunes were reversed. God subsequently allows Satan to test his theory, and Job undergoes a series of horrendous occurrences, through which he continues to bless God in his prayers.

Among the many lessons that Job offers, perhaps the most significant is that God allows suffering for the righteous, for reasons not always readily apparent from our perspective.
7. "____ does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore ____ is the fulfillment of the law." Which word completes this quote from the book of Romans?

Answer: Love

Romans 13:10 (the verse in the question) is preceded by verse 9, which states, "The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not covet," and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

The Apostle Paul continues his instruction to the Christians in Rome with this reiteration of Jesus' own words to the Pharisees when they challenged him to name the greatest commandment (Mark 12:28-34).
8. "My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from me, nor is their ____ concealed from my eyes." Which word completes this quote from the book of Jeremiah?

Answer: sin

Jeremiah was not a popular prophet, as he had the unfortunate job of prophesying the impending doom of Israel to be taken into captivity. Along the way he also had to explain why God's favour was being taken away.

In Jeremiah 16, God tells to Jeremiah to explain the reason for his disfavour when asked, part of which is shown here in verse 12 - "But you have behaved more wickedly than your ancestors. See how all of you are following the stubbornness of your evil hearts instead of obeying me."

The verse in the question is Jeremiah 16:17.
9. "Salt is ____, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?" Which word completes this quote from the book of Luke?

Answer: good

Luke 14:34 follows a number of verses in which Luke describes the cost and sacrifice required to be a true disciple of Christ. Verses 25-27 demand the denial of self (and family) and the requirement to 'carry their cross' to follow Jesus. In verses 28-30 Luke describes one who begins the construction of a tower and cannot finish it, stressing how they are ridiculed if they cannot follow through. In verses 31-33 a king must humble himself against a stronger foe in order to have peace, which Luke equates to giving up everything.

Verse 34 and its reference to salt warns of the consequences of turning away from that total commitment to discipleship.
10. "Whoever winks with their eye is plotting perversity; whoever purses their lips is bent on _____." Which word completes this quote from the book of Proverbs?

Answer: evil

The book of Proverbs (generally attributed to King Solomon) provides a myriad of wise sayings and admonishments. This verse is no exception as a warning is given about those who would do perverse and evil things, explaining that impure motivation is shown through slyness and forethought.

The quote above is Proverbs 16:30.
