Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the name Micah in Hebrew signify?

Answer: Who is like God or Yahweh

Micah of Moreseth is the sixth of the twelve minor prophets in the Tanakh. The Book of Micah records his prophesies and sayings. It was most likely written between 735 and 700 B.C. Micah describes God as perfect and unparalleled in showing love, mercy, kindness, salvation and faithfulness. Micah 7:18; "Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love. Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean! You will show us your faithfulness and unfailing love as you promised to our ancestors Abraham and Jacob long ago." - NLT Bible
2. In the KJV Bible, amazingly, the last words spoken by another prophet in 2nd Chronicles 18:27 are exactly the same as the first words spoken by Micah in 1:2; "Hear, all ye people." Please can you name the other similar sounding prophet?

Answer: Micaiah

The last words of the similarly sounding Micaiah the Samaritan prophet in 2nd Chronicles 18 and also in 1st Kings 22 are the same in Hebrew as the first words spoken by Micah. Micah 1:1-2: "The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah--the vision he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

Hear, you peoples, all of you, listen, earth and all who live in it, that the Sovereign LORD may bear witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple." - NIV Bible
3. In which area is the town or village of Moreseth?

Answer: Judah

Moreseth was in the Southern kingdom of Judah as opposed to the Northern kingdom of Israel or Samaria.
4. In the NIV Bible, which of the following does Micah not explicitly prophesy or talk about?

Answer: Rise in power of the Romans

Chapter 1 talks about the judgement on Samaria and also gives warnings to Judah and its leaders. Chapter 4 about the restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple. Chapter 6 talks about God's accusation against Judah in following the ways of Israel and failing to act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly (honestly) with their God. 6:8 says "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Listen! The Lord is calling to the city - and to fear your name is wisdom - 'Heed the rod and the One who appointed it'"
5. In the NIV Bible Micah 5:5 says, "And he will be our peace when the Assyrians invade our land and march through our fortresses. We will raise against them ___ shepherds, even eight commanders," Please can you supply the missing number.

Answer: seven

Micah talks about a coming Messiah or Saviour from Bethlehem, Judah. Christians believe this prophecy refers to the arrival of Jesus. Micah 5:2 says, "'But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.' Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites.

He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be our peace when the Assyrians invade our land and march through our fortresses. We will raise against them seven shepherds, even eight commanders, who will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, the land of Nimrod with drawn sword.

He will deliver us from the Assyrians when they invade our land and march across our borders.

The remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait for anyone or depend on man."
6. In the NIV Bible Micah prophesied sometime between 750 and 686 b.c. during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah (Micah 1:1). Which Biblical prophets is he considered a contemporary of? (Hint: First letters of their names are consecutive in the alphabet)

Answer: Hosea and Isaiah

There are a lot of similarities between this Book and the first few chapters of Isaiah. However, since Micah like Amos was from rural Judah, his description of Jerusalem differs. Micah predicted the fall of Samaria (1:6) because of the sins of the people of Israel, which took place in 722-721. This would place his early ministry in the reigns of Jotham (750-732) and Ahaz (735-715).
7. In the NIV Bible Micah 3:11-12 says, "Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the LORD's support and say, 'Is not the LORD among us? No disaster will come upon us.' Therefore because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets." Which prophetic Book also refers to this exact same Scripture?

Answer: Jeremiah

In Jeremiah 26, the prophet had just prophesied against Jerusalem and the Temple. The priests and the prophets were all baying for his blood. However God helped Jeremiah and via the elders of the land made them and the people see reason. 26:17-19 says, "Some of the elders of the land stepped forward and said to the entire assembly of people, 'Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah.

He told all the people of Judah, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: "'Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, the temple hill a mound overgrown with thickets.' 'Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did not Hezekiah fear the LORD and seek his favor? And did not the LORD relent, so that he did not bring the disaster he pronounced against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster on ourselves!'"
8. What according to Micah chapter 7 is perhaps the greatest evidence or sign of God's loving kindness, concern and mercy? (NIV Bible)

Answer: God Himself providing atonement for His people's sin

In chapter 7 Micah underlines the significance of the literal meaning of his name in exclaiming that 'who is like God' in that he is incomparable in His loving mercy, righteousness and justice to any other. 7:18-21 says, "Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago." When people get into all kinds of sorrows and trouble because of sin, God in His love Himself finds a way and provides atonement. John 3:16 NIV Bible
9. Several maybe significant historical events took place during the period of Micah the prophet. Which one did not?

Answer: Nebuchadnezzar's conquest of Jerusalem

In the NIV Micah prophesies about the future Babylonian conquest of the land and the subsequent exile of the Jews to Babylon. However he then says that the exiles will be rescued and redeemed from there and will return to their land. Micah 4:9-10 says, "Why do you now cry aloud-- have you no king? Has your ruler perished, that pain seizes you like that of a woman in labor? Writhe in agony, Daughter of Zion, like a woman in labor, for now you must leave the city to camp in the open field. You will go to Babylon; there you will be rescued.

There the LORD will redeem you out of the hand of your enemies."
10. In the NIV Bible in the last days Micah says in Chapter 4 that "The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem." What will happen subsequent to that?

Answer: There will be peace among nations

Chapter 4 describes the holy exaltation of Mt. Zion and the Word. Micah 4:1-4 says, "In the last days the mountain of the LORD's temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and peoples will stream to it.

Many nations will come and say, 'Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.' The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken."
