Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We learn from the Gospel of Mark (New International Version) that this apostle was a tax collector. It is also revealed that his father was named Alphaeus. Jesus told this apostle to follow him, which he did.

Answer: Levi

During this same story we learn that Levi would have several people over to his house for a great banquet including other tax collectors, and Jesus. The Pharisees were critical of him for doing this. Levi was also called Matthew. Alphaeus was also the name of the father of James, probably James the Less, however, there is no mention of Levi and James being brothers, and James was not a tax collector.
2. This apostle was a fisherman. He may be most familiar to many (although quite unfairly) for his denial of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Many Catholics consider him to be the first Pope.

Answer: Simon Peter

Simon Peter was part of the inner circle. He was with Jesus during many important parts of his ministry including the Transfiguration. Tradition tells us that he was crucified upside down since he did not feel worthy to be crucified the same way Christ was.
3. We read in the Gospel of John that this apostle is referred to as a thief. The Gospel of Mark says that Satan entered this apostle. We also know that this apostle would commit suicide. Who is he?

Answer: Judas Iscariot

Judas is the most infamous apostle as he is the one who betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Most historians believe Judas became frustrated when he realized that Jesus was not going to be the type of "king" Judas thought he would be. After betraying Jesus, Judas was overcome with guilt and hung himself.
4. This apostle was a fisherman. He had a brother named John. His father was Zebedee. We know from the Book of Acts that he was executed by King Herod.

Answer: James the Greater

There were actually two apostles with the name James. The one described in this question is James the Greater. The other apostle was known as James the Lesser and very little is known about him. James the Greater along with his brother John and Simon Peter are collectively known as the Inner Circle of Jesus.
5. We learn in the Gospel of Matthew that this apostle, like his brother Simon Peter, was a fisherman. He was friends with another apostle Philip. Prior to meeting Jesus, he was a follower of John the Baptist. Who is this apostle?

Answer: Andrew

Andrew was actually the one who told Peter about Jesus. We read in the book of John that he is often associated with Philip. Tradition states that he was crucified in what is now modern day Greece.
6. Which apostle asked the following of Jesus Christ: "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" in the NIV version of John Chapter 6. In response to this question Jesus said he was the way, the truth and the life.

Answer: Thomas

From this apostle comes the expression "doubting Thomas". We don't know why he was not present with the other apostles the first time Jesus appeared to them after the resurrection but he refused to believe other's claims that Jesus had risen from the dead. He would eventually come to meet Jesus again and his belief in Jesus was restored. (Chapter 20 of the Book of John).
7. Many of the apostles were fishermen, including this one. Jesus referred to him as a rock that he was going to build his church on. He also is credited as writing two of the books of the New Testament. Who is he?

Answer: Simon Peter

Peter would write both 1 Peter and 2 Peter in the New Testament. He is also mentioned in Chapters 1 and 2 of the book of Galatians. His brother was Andrew. He was often known for speaking without thinking. During Jesus' trial, he went so far as to deny that he even knew Jesus.
8. This apostle was often referred to as the disciple whom Jesus loved. He is credited as writing five books in the New Testament. One of his brothers was also one of the apostles. During his later years he would be exiled to the Isle of Patmos.

Answer: John

The apostle John wrote the Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and the book of Revelation. He was part of the inner circle of Jesus along with Simon Peter and James the Greater (his brother). Tradition states he died of old age unlike most of the other apostles who were executed.
9. We read in Chapter One of the book of Acts that the apostles had to find a replacement for Judas Iscariot who was dead by this point. After they prayed, this man was chosen to replace Judas as one of the twelve apostles.

Answer: Matthias

Judas Iscariot had committed suicide after betraying Jesus. As a result, there was a need to find his replacement. We read in chapter one of the Book of Acts that there were two men who were proposed to take his place, Matthias and Barsabbas (also known as Joseph or Justus). After praying they cast lots and the lot fell to Matthias.
10. Jesus referred to this apostle as "a true Israelite in whom there is nothing false." (NIV version of Chapter One of the Book of John). Philip told this apostle about Jesus and that Jesus was from Nazareth. Which apostle is this?

Answer: Nathanael

Nathanael was less than impressed when he was told that the Messiah was from Nazareth. We read in chapter One of the Book of John that Nathanael speaks poorly of the town of Nazareth. He was also known by the name Bartholomew.
