Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Jonah's father?

Answer: Amittai

Jonah 1:1 "Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai..."

Not much is known about Amittai other than his name means "loyal" and the family was from Gathhepher (see 2 Kings 14:25).
2. Where was Jonah told to go?

Answer: Nineveh

Jonah 1:2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me."

Nineveh was the capital of Assyria and according to the "Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Dictionary" it is considered the greatest of Assyria's capitals. It was established by Nimrod.
3. What was Jonah doing during the storm (in verse 1:5)?

Answer: sleeping

Jonah 1:5 "Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep."

Jonah knew that he was not obeying God and knew that God was angry, but at that point he did not care because he did not agree with what God wanted him to do.
4. What did Jonah do when he was swallowed by the fish?

Answer: prayed

Jonah 2:1 "Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly."

Jonah realized at this point that he had disobeyed God.
5. Did Jonah die in the fish's belly?

Answer: No

Jonah 2:10 "And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land."

Later on in the book of Jonah it talks about Jonah going to Nineveh, so he clearly was alive even after being swallowed by a big fish.
6. How long a journey was Nineveh?

Answer: 3 days

Jonah 3:3 "So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey."

Three is a common number seen in the Bible.
- Jonah was in the fish for three days.
- It would have taken him three days to get to Nineveh.
- Jesus was in the tomb for three days in the New Testament.
- The Trinity is made of three: Father, Son, Holy Ghost.
7. What did the Ninevites do as a result of the message they heard?

Answer: They turned from their evil ways.

Jonah 3:8 "But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands."

I found the verse in Latin too "Et operiantur saccis homines et jumenta, et clament ad Dominum in fortitudine: et convertatur vir a via sua mala, et ab iniquitate quĉ est in manibus eorum."

The people of Nineveh had done a lot of bad things, but quickly changed when they were made aware of what they were doing.
8. Complete verse 4:3 (King James Version) "Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me, for it is better for me to ________ _______ ______ _______."

Answer: die than to live

Jonah is so upset that God forgave the people of Nineveh that he doesn't even want to live anymore.
9. What happens to Jonah in verse 4:8 (King James Version)?

Answer: He fainted.

Jonah 4:8 "And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live."

Incidentally, Phil Vischer is one of the co-founders of Veggie Tales. One of their movies is "Jonah: A Veggie Tales Movie".
10. What is the last word of the Book of Jonah in the King James Version?

Answer: cattle

Jonah 4:11 "And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?"

Unfortunately it seems Jonah just never got it...it is important to forgive people and give them a second chance because none of us are perfect.

Thank you for taking my quiz. The next one will be on the book of Micah.
