Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Othniel, was the first judge of Israel, to what other famous Bible character was he closely related?

Answer: Caleb

Judges 3:9, "But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother." This fact is also mentioned in the book of Joshua. According to some scholars, Othniel might have been Caleb's nephew. Othniel delivered Israel from the king of Aram.
2. Ehud, the second judge of Israel, was like an assassin. He stabbed this fat king with a homemade sword. Who was this king?

Answer: Eglon

Judges 3:12-30. Eglon was the king of Moab who conquered Israel for 18 years. Ehud, from the tribe of Benjamin did not seem likely to be a hero. However, the Israelites were liberated when Ehud killed Eglon and led Israel to defeat Moab. Ehud also governed the longest of all the judges, 80 years!
3. This judge is only mentioned twice in the whole Bible. He is known for killing 600 Philistines with an ox-goad.

Answer: Shamgar

Judges 3:31, "After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel."

An oxgoad is a farmers tool for getting ox to move. It was usually about 8 feet long and had a pointy end. In desperate times, they were sometimes used as spears.
4. Deborah was arguably the most successful judge. After she liberated Israel from the Canaanites, how many years of peace did Israel have?

Answer: 40

Judges 5:31. Deborah was the only woman judge and has inspired many people for years. In Judges 4-5 Deborah and her general Barak liberated Israel from the Canaanite armies even though they did not have chariots like their enemies. Deborah then wrote a song as recorded in Judges 5.
5. Gideon is probably one of the more famous Judges. However, here is a bit of trivia you probably did not remember. What object did Gideon make that the Israelites turned into an idol?

Answer: An ephod

Judges 8:22-27. This was Gideon's big mistake. The Ephod was a sign of God's power yet the Israelites worshiped it instead of Yahweh. The ephod is a lot like Moses' bronze snake which the Israelites also worshiped as God.

An ephod was a priestly robe.
6. Jephthah was a powerful warrior, unfortunately, a civil war broke out in Israel when Jephthah was judge. Which tribe did Israel have to fight against.

Answer: Ephraim

Ephraim was angry at Jephthah for not calling them to fight the Ammonites. Judges 12:1-7. However, Jephthah was a clever judge, he captured the fords of Jordan leading to Ephraim. Then, he had all who cross the ford say the word, "Shibboleth," however the people of Ephraim would pronounce it like "Sibboleth." That way, Jephthah stopped the men of Ephraim without any large battles.
7. Which three judges governed between the times of Jephthah and Samson?

Answer: Ibzan, Elon, Abdon

Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon are minor judges that are briefly mentioned in Judges 12:8-15. These three judges governed for a total of 25 years. Ibzan for 7, Elon for 10, and Abdon for 8.
8. Now for the most famous judge, Samson. How many chapters in the book of Judges are about Samson?

Answer: 4

Judges 13-16 are all about Samson. Chapter 13 is about the foretelling and birth of Samson. Chapter 14 is about Samson's Marriage. Chapter 15 tells about Samson's battles against the Philistines. Finally, Chapter 16 is about Samson's tragic downfall.
9. Which of these was a god of the Philistines, mentioned in Judges?

Answer: Dagon

Judges 16:23, "Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, 'Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands." The Philistines' statue of Dagon was destroyed when they captured the Ark of the Covenant.
10. Judges 21:25, Finish the sentence. "In those days Israel had no..."

Answer: king

Judges 21:25, "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit." This is the last verse in Judges. This verse suggests Israel needs a king to give order to Israel. This eventually leads into Saul's kingship which would help unite Israel for 32 years.
