Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Matthew 1:23, Jesus is referred to as Immanuel, which means 'God with us', and many Christians believe the verse is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. What Old Testament book makes reference to Immanuel? (Some Bible versions spell the name as Emmanuel.)

Answer: Isaiah

The name Immanuel can be found in only Isaiah 7:14 in the Old Testament and Matthew 1:23 in the New Testament. Isaiah 7:14 in the NKJV, states "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." The verse is re-printed in Matthew 1:23 to bring attention to the fact Old Testament prophecy had been fulfilled with the birth of Jesus.
2. Bartimaeus, a blind beggar in Jericho, had a specific title for Jesus. According to Mark 10:47, what title did Bartimaeus use to refer to Jesus?

Answer: Son of David

When Jesus visited Jericho, Bartimaeus referred to Him as the Son of David to get His attention. Son of David is a Messianic title with Old Testament Scripture stating the Messiah would descend from the line of King David.

Reference is made to Jesus descending from the line of David in the two genealogies in the New Testament. The two genealogies are found in Matthew 1 and Luke 3. Using the NKJV, Jesus is referred to as the Son of David no less than eighteen times in the New Testament, with ten occurrences in the Gospel of Matthew alone.
3. According to John 1:34, who was the first disciple to call Jesus the Son of God? (And no, it's not Peter.)

Answer: Nathanael

Going strictly by Scripture, Nathanael, also known as Bartholomew, was the first of the original Twelve Disciples to call Jesus the Son of God. In John 1:49, in the NKJV, Nathanael proclaims to Jesus, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Peter made a similar declaration in Matthew 16:16 that Christ is "the Son of the living God." However, it is believed Peter's declaration came months, possibly a couple years, after Nathanael's statement.

For the record, a similar declaration by Peter is also recorded in Mark 8:29 and Luke 9:20. In John 10:36, Jesus reaffirms He is the Son of God to a group of people who were so angry with Him that they were about to stone Him.
4. In what book of the New Testament do you find Jesus described as the Alpha and the Omega?

Answer: Revelation

Jesus is referred to as the Alpha and the Omega in the Book of Revelation. The verse is from Revelation 1:8. Revelation was written by John while in exile on the wind-swept island of Patmos.

In addition to being described as the "Alpha and the Omega", Revelation 1:8 states Jesus is the "Beginning and the End" as well as the One "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, meaning Christ is 'Almighty' from the 'Beginning' to the 'End'.
5. In what book of the New Testament is Jesus referred to as the Word?

Answer: Gospel of John

In the Gospel of John, the fourth book of the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the Word.

John 1:1-5 in the NKJV states: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it."

Many Christians use John 1:1-5 to affirm the divinity of Christ.
6. Out of the four choices below, what book in the NKJV refers to Jesus as the Savior of the World?

Answer: 1 John

The statement about Jesus being the Savior of the World was made by John, in 1 John 4:14. The verse in the NKJV states, "And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world."

A similar statement is also made in John 4:42 by friends of the Samaritan woman at the well. They are quoted as saying Jesus is "Christ, the Savior of the world."

Tradition holds the writer of 1 John was one of the Twelve Disciples. He is also credited with writing 2 John, 3 John, the Gospel of John and Revelation.
7. According to John 4:25-26, what woman made reference to the coming of the "Messiah, who is called Christ" and Jesus affirming that it was He?

Answer: Samaritan woman at the well

After encountering Jesus at Jacob's well, an unnamed Samaritan woman is quoted as telling Him, "I know the Messiah is coming, who is called Christ." In response to her statement, Jesus acknowledges He is the Messiah, who is called Christ. See John 1:26 for details about the conversation between Jesus and the woman.

John 1:42 tells of many people in the woman's village coming to believe in Jesus, referring to Him as "Christ, the Savior of the world."
8. Who proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world? (John 1:29)

Answer: John the Baptist

Jesus was referred to as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" by John the Baptist, as per John 1:29.

According to Scripture, John made the famous statement while he was baptizing people in the Jordan River when Jesus paid a visit.

John 1:34 in the NKJV goes on to quote John the Baptist as saying, "I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."
9. Christians often point to Old Testament Scripture and refer to Jesus as a Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and a Prince of Peace. Whereabouts in the Old Testament do you find such names for Jesus?

Answer: Isaiah

Many Christians believe Isaiah 9:6 is prophecy written about the coming of Jesus Christ. The verse in the NKJV states: "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

In addition to Isaiah 9:6, many Christians believe a substantial number of passages in Isaiah refer to the coming of the Messiah, with Jesus being the fulfillment of that prophecy.
10. Although Jesus had a variety names, two of the four Gospels describe Him as the Son of Man more than sixty times. Using the NKJV, in what two Gospels do you find Jesus described most often as the Son of Man?

Answer: Matthew and Luke

Jesus is described as the Son of Man in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke a total of sixty-three times, using the NKJV. (There are thirty-two occurrences in Matthew and thirty-one in Luke.) However, the term Son of Man is used only sixteen times in Mark and twelve times in John.

To sum things up, Jesus often referred to Himself as the Son of Man. For example in Luke 9:22 He is quoted as saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day."
