Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first word of the book of Mark in the King James Version?

Answer: The

It says in Mark 1:1, "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God."

The author of the book of Mark was John Mark. It is believed by scholars that Mark was the first of the four Gospels written.
2. Who does chapter 2 say is the father of Levi?

Answer: Alphaeus

It says in Mark 2:14, "And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him."

For those of you who picked Jacob, he is the father of a different Levi than 2:14 refers to. This Levi is also known as Matthew.
3. What did Jesus say to the storm in verse 4:39 in the King James Version?

Answer: Peace, be still.

It says in Mark 4:39, "And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."

It says that people wondered what kind of man Jesus was, that the sea calmed simply by His commanding it.
4. What was the name of the demons in chapter 5 who were possessing the man and causing him to cut himself?

Answer: Legion

It says in Mark 5:9, "And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many."

In Roman history terms a legion could be between 4,500 and 6,000 soldiers. However, this man refers to many demons inside him when he says "we are many".
5. In Chapter 6, who did King Herod believe Jesus was?

Answer: John the Baptist

It says in Mark 6:14, "And King Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him."

Earlier, John the Baptist had been beheaded to make Herod's daughter Salome happy.
6. According to Mark 10:27 (KJV), what is possible with God?

Answer: all things

It says in Mark 10:27, "And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible."

Many people misunderstand this verse and other verses like it, thinking it says we can do whatever we want. Actually, what most Christians believe this verse to mean is that if it's God's will, we can do anything because He will give us what we need to succeed.
7. Whose image was on the coin in Chapter 12?

Answer: Caesar

It says in Mark 12:16, "And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's."

This was asked because the people asked Jesus if they should pay taxes to Caesar. In reality they were being hypocritical by saying that they didn't believe in Jesus (that he was the Messiah) but at the same time saying "but we don't want to have to pay taxes either". Jesus replied in verse 17 when he said, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
8. What did Jesus say would happen to the sun after the tribulation?

Answer: It will be darkened.

It says in Mark 13:24, "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light."

The Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Dictionary defines the tribulation as the period when Christians will suffer greatly for their beliefs. Many Christians believe this will be greatly increased before Christ's second coming.
9. What did Peter, James and John do when Jesus was praying in Chapter 14?

Answer: fell asleep

It says in Mark 14:37, "And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?"

Jesus was praying because He knew the time was near when Judas would betray Him.
10. What does Jesus say (not in English) in Mark 15:34 in the King James Version?

Answer: Eloi, Eloi lama sabachthani

It says in Mark 15:34, "And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

There has been some debate over which language Jesus was speaking. In one Gospel, it looks more like Aramaic; in another, it looks more like Hebrew; and in both, it's more difficult to tell because the words are written in the Greek alphabet.
