Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For $100, what was David doing when Samuel came to anoint him as king?

Answer: tending his father's sheep

See 1 Samuel 16:1-13. David was chosen by God, whilst he was still young, because God looked at his heart, rather than his physical appearance or strength (verse 7).
2. For $200, what was the name of Jacob's youngest son?

Answer: Benjamin

Genesis 35:16-18. Joseph and Benjamin were both born to Jacob's second wife, Rachel, who until that point had been unable to have children.

Gad and Reuben were two of the other sons of Jacob.
3. For $300, when the twelve spies were sent to spy out the land for the Israelites in Numbers 13, only two brought back a positive report. Who were they?

Answer: Joshua and Caleb

See especially verses 26-33. It seems that only Joshua and Caleb saw the good things of the land that God had promised to them. The other spies saw only the giants and the problems that the Israelites would have to overcome in order to live in the land.

It was because the rest of the Israelites believed the negative reports that they had to wander in the desert for 40 years, that God would not allow anyone who was aged 20 or over when they left Egypt to enter the promised land, except for Joshua and Caleb. See Numbers 14.
4. For $500, in the book of Philippians, how often does Paul say that we should rejoice in the Lord?

Answer: always

See Philippians 4:4. Although, as human beings, we find it hard to rejoice all the time, because of the difficult times we all pass through, Paul says that we should do so.

Although I cannot claim to have reached Paul's ideal, I have often found that if, when I am going through a difficult time, I begin to praise God, it lifts my spirits and helps to put things into their proper perspective.
5. For $1,000, according to 1 Peter 5:7, why can we cast all our anxiety upon God?

Answer: because he cares for us

This verse states very clearly that God cares for us and that he cares about the things that cause us anxiety. Most of the things that we worry about are things over which we have little or no control. According to this verse, God wants us to trust him with our concerns about our family or anything else in our lives which is causing us concern.

Although many Christians believe that God will never let us down and that he answers our prayers, these are not given as reasons in this verse why we should cast our anxiety on him.
6. For $2,000, who rolled away the stone when Jesus rose from the dead?

Answer: an angel of the Lord

See Matthew 28:3. When the guards reported what had happened to the Jewish authorities, they were told to say that the disciples had stolen the body whilst the guards were sleeping (11-15). If they had indeed been sleeping on duty, they would have been in danger of execution for dereliction of duty.
7. For $4,000, who does Paul call his "true son in the faith"?

Answer: Timothy

1 Timothy 1:2. Timothy was like a son to Paul, although they were not blood relations. Timothy was converted under Paul's preaching and the two New Testament letters addressed to him are written to give advice to a young church leader from a more experienced leader.
8. For $8,000, after which King's death did Isaiah have his vision in the temple?

Answer: Uzziah

See Isaiah 6:1. This is when Isaiah saw a vision of the Lord in his temple and received his call to be a prophet.

Isaiah recognised his own unworthiness to be a prophet, because he considered himself a man of unclean lips living amongst a people of unclean lips. However, a seraph brought coals from the altar and touched his lips to take away his guilt and atone for his sin (5-7).
9. For $16,000, when Jesus sent out his disciples to preach in the villages, what were they allowed to take with them?

Answer: a staff and sandals

See Mark 6:6-13. It seems that they were to trust the people of the villages to clothe, feed and otherwise take care of them. And it would appear that the villagers did.
10. For $32,000, what colour was the cord that Rahab put in the window so that her house would not be attacked when the Israelites entered Jericho?

Answer: Scarlet

Joshua 2:17-21. Because she helped the spies who had been sent into the city, they agreed on this sign, so that she and her family would be spared the fate of the other inhabitants.
11. For $64,000, to which tiny seed does Jesus compare the Kingdom of God?

Answer: mustard

See Luke 13:18-19. The mustard seed is one of the smallest in nature, but it grows into a strong tree, which gives shelter to birds. Jesus says that the Kingdom of God is like this, starting small, but growing into something big which will provide shelter for many.
12. For $125,000, of whom did Jesus say: "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel."?

Answer: a Roman centurion, who sought healing for his servant

See Luke 7:1-10. The centurion recognised Jesus as a man of authority who was also under authority, just as the centurion himself was by virtue of his position in the Roman army.
13. For $250,000, is this statement true or false? When they separated, after travelling for some time together, Abraham allowed Lot, his nephew, to choose which way he wanted to go.

Answer: True

See Genesis 13. Although it appeared that the land Lot chose was much better than the land left for Abraham, this choice took Lot and his family near Sodom and Gommorah, which were later destroyed by God because their inhabitants were evil. You can read this story and the effect on Lot and his family in later chapters of Genesis.
14. For $500,000, which of the Israelites' enemies worshipped the idol Dagon?

Answer: Philistines

See 1 Samuel 5:1-12. In this story, the Philistines put the ark of the covenant, which they had captured from the Israelites, in their temple to Dagon and the idol fell on its face before the ark.
15. For $1,000,000, which prophet was told by God to marry "an adulterous wife"?

Answer: Hosea

See Hosea 1:2-10. This marriage was to be a symbol of God's relationship with the Israelites, who had rebelled against him. God wanted to win the people back to himself, in the same way as Hosea wooed and won the unfaithful wife.
