Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For $100, who said 'Come and follow me and I will make you fishers of men'?

Answer: Jesus

See Matthew 4:19. With these words, Jesus called Simon and Andrew to be his first disciples. James and John, whom he called shortly afterwards, were also fishermen.
2. For $200, to which country did Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus flee in order to escape Herod?

Answer: Egypt

See Matthew 2:13-18. Herod asked the wise men (Magi) to return to him after they had visited Jesus and tell him where he was, so that he could go and worship him.

The wise men were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, because he planned to kill Jesus. When Herod realised that the wise men had tricked him, he ordered all the male babies of two years and under to be killed.

But God warned Joseph in a dream what was going to happen and told them to flee to Egypt, where they stayed until Herod died.

Perhaps one of the interesting things about this story is that Herod ordered all the male babies of two years old and under to be killed. This suggests that the wise men may not have visited Jesus until up to two years after his birth, which is much later than is normally portrayed in religious art and nativity plays.
3. For $300, why did the Lord tell Moses to take off his sandals when he approached the burning bush, as explained in Exodus 3?

Answer: because the place where he was standing was holy ground

See Exodus 3:5. Moses heard God speaking to him from the burning bush, which was on fire but did not burn up (verse 2). God called him to go back to Egypt and tell Pharaoh to let God's people go.

Moses was very reluctant to do so, and put up lots of arguments why it would be better for someone else to go in his place. But eventually he went along with Aaron, his brother.

You can read the rest of the story, including Moses' argument with God, in the following chapters of Exodus.
4. For $500, in which town did Jesus grow up?

Answer: Nazareth

See Luke 2. This is where Joseph and Mary's home was (verses 1-6). They only went to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, because of a Roman census, although this also ensured the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), quoted in Matthew 2:5.

Joseph, Mary and Jesus returned to Nazareth after their flight into Egypt to escape Herod's order that all the boys under 2 years old should be killed.
5. For $1,000, who was the father of James and John (the disciples of Jesus)?

Answer: Zebedee

See Matthew 4:21. Zechariah and Zephaniah are two of the minor prophets in the Old Testament. Zedekiah was a king of Judah (2 Kings 24).
6. For $2,000, which of the 12 disciples were called the 'sons of thunder' by Jesus?

Answer: James and John

See Mark 3:17. This may be because of the incident recorded in Luke 9 where the people in a Samaritan village rejected Jesus and James and John asked him whether they should call fire down from heaven to destroy them (verses 51-56).
7. For $4,000, which woman killed a man by nailing a tent peg through his head?

Answer: Jael

Judges 4:18-21. In the time when Deborah was Judge of Israel, Sisera was the commander of the army of Jabin, a king of Canaan and one of Israel's enemies. Jael lured him into her tent and killed him.
8. For $8,000, what is the name of the runaway slave about whom Paul writes in his letter to Philemon?

Answer: Onesimus

See the short (1 chapter) book of Philemon in the New Testament. Onesimus was Philemon's slave, who ran away, probably because he had committed a great wrong towards his master, such as stealing.

As a runaway slave returning to his master, he could expect nothing more than a death sentence. However, Paul pleaded with Philemon on Onesimus' behalf, because he had become a Christian. He asked Philemon to welcome him back into his household as a brother in Christ, rather than as a slave.

Some Christians see this as a picture of Christ interceding with God on our behalf.
9. For $16,000, who was Abraham's father?

Answer: Terah

See Genesis 11:26. God told Abraham to leave his country, his people and his father's household and go to the land that He would show him (Genesis 12:1).

However, as you read the story, you will see that Abraham only obeyed part of this commandment, because he took Lot (his nephew), all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran (verse 5). It was only later that he separated from Lot.

Eshcol, Mamre and Aner are all mentioned as allies of Abraham in Genesis 14:13.
10. For $32,000, where were the believers in Christ first called Christians?

Answer: Antioch

Acts 11:19-27. This was during a year that Barnabas and Saul spent in the church there teaching. The church grew in numbers and in their faith. It may be this that marked them out as different, as followers of Christ, which is what the word Christian means.
11. For $64,000, according to the book of Revelation, for how long was there silence in Heaven?

Answer: half an hour

Revelation 8:1. This happened between the opening of seven seals and the blowing of seven trumpets, so I guess it is like an intermission.
12. For $125,000, what does the name Ichabod mean?

Answer: The glory has departed

See 1 Samuel 4:19-22. The Israelites had suffered defeat at the hands of the Philistines, who captured the ark of God. Eli's two sons were killed and Eli died when he heard the news.

Eli's daughter-in-law gave birth to a son and gave him the name Ichabod. She said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured." (verse 22).
13. For $250,000, to which village were two of Jesus' disciples walking, when he came and walked alongside them after his resurrection?

Answer: Emmaus

Luke 24:13-33. When they first met him, they did not recognise who he was, especially since they were talking about recent events in Jerusalem, i.e. his trial and crucifixion, but it appeared that he knew nothing about them. "'What things?' he asked" (verse 19).

He explained the scriptures concerning his death and resurrection to them, but they still did not recognise him until they invited him to stay and eat with them. They recognised him when he broke bread and at that moment he disappeared from their sight.
14. For $500,000, Phoebe was a servant of the church at Cenchrea. In which of Paul's letters is she mentioned?

Answer: Romans

Romans 16:1-2. Paul asked the Christians in Rome to help her in any way they can, because she had helped a lot of people, including him.
15. For $1,000,000, in which New Testament book does this verse appear? 'And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.'

Answer: 1 Peter

1 Peter 5:4. Peter is writing to those who serve as elders in a church (and perhaps others in church leadership). He says that if they do their job faithfully, the Chief Shepherd (Jesus) will reward them when he returns.

Congratulations! If you made it this far and got all the answers right, you won a virtual $1,000,000.
