Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Jeremiah 32 we read that Jeremiah was instructed by God to buy a field from his cousin. How much money did he pay for this field, according to the NIV?

Answer: Seventeen shekels of silver

He bought it from his cousin Hanamel because it was his right and duty to redeem it and possess it. He bought it from him for seventeen shekels of silver. The field was located at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. This can be found in Jeremiah 32:6-15.
2. Fill in the missing word according to the NIV: "You cannot serve both ___ and money."

Answer: God

In Matthew 6:24 Jesus says that you can't be the slave of two masters: you will either love the first and hate the second, or love the second and hate the first. He then says that you cannot serve God and money at the same time.
3. In the Gospel of Mark (NIV), Jesus' disciples say it would take how much money to feed 5,000 people?

Answer: Eight months' wages

We read this in the story at the beginning of Mark 6, where Jesus is teaching a very large crowd of people. The disciples say that they need to send the people home so they can eat. Jesus says that the disciples should give them some food. They then say that it would take eight months' wages to feed such a large crowd.

Jesus asks them how much food they have and they say that they only have five loaves of bread and two small fish. Jesus then tells the disciples to set everyone down in groups. Jesus then takes the food, blesses it then has the disciples give it to the crowd. When everyone has eaten their fill the disciples go through and pick up twelve basket of leftovers. The people that are there numbered 5,000 men plus women and children.
4. Judas was given money to betray Jesus. After Judas gave this money back to the chief priests and elders, what did they do with it?

Answer: Bought a field

After Judas betrayed Jesus he felt he had sinned by betraying innocent blood, so he gave the money back to the chief priests and elders. They said that it was against the law to put blood money into the treasury so they used it to buy a field. The field was used as a burial place for foreigners. This can be found in Matthew 27:1-10.
5. When the famine that Joseph told of when he interpreted Pharaoh's dreams came to Egypt and all of the people's money was gone, the Canaanites went to Egypt to buy food. What did they purchase the food with instead of money?

Answer: Livestock

While Joseph was in prison in Egypt Pharaoh had a dream. No one was able to interpret the dream but one person remembered that he had a dream that Joseph was able to interpret so he suggested that Pharaoh let Joseph come and interpret the dream.

The interpretation was that there were going to be seven years of plentiful crops but then there would be a deadly famine in the land. Since Joseph was able to interpret the dream, Pharaoh put him in charge of storing up food during the plentiful years for the seven years of famine with only Pharaoh himself more powerful than him.

Joseph did this and when the seven years of plenty had passed Joseph sold the food he had stocked to the Egyptians and the people of the surrounding areas. But soon all of the people's money was gone so Joseph told them to bring their livestock in exchange for food.

This can be found in Genesis 47:13-16.
6. In the parable of the unmerciful servant (Matthew 18 NIV), how much money did the first servant owe in modern terms?

Answer: Millions of dollars

Matthew 18 says that there was a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. During this there came a man who owed the equivalent of millions of dollars but couldn't pay it. The king ordered that the man's wife, children and all that he had be sold so that he could pay the debt. The servant begged the king to be patient with him and that he would pay it all back when he had the money. The king was filled with pity and he decided to free the man and cancel the debt.

When the servant went out he found a man who owed him only a few dollars. He went up to him, grabbed him and started to choke him and demanded the money he was owed. The other man begged him to be patient with him and that he would pay him back when he had the money. But instead of having mercy on him, he had him imprisoned until he could pay the debt.

When the king heard about this he called the first servant in and said "You wicked servant, I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?" The king was so angered that he handed the servant over to the jailers and told them to torture him until he could pay his debt.

This can be found in Matthew 18:21-35.
7. In the parable of the talents, how many talents did the man who was given five talents gain while the master was gone?

Answer: Five

In this story a man was going on a journey and he entrusted his property to his servants. He paid each of his servants some money according to their abilities. To one he gave five talents, to another two talents and to another one talent.

The first two servants each put their money to work and doubled their money but the one who was only given one talent buried the talent he was given.

When the master came back he was proud of the first two's job. But he was angry at the third one for what he had done and he had him thrown outside into the darkness and gave his talent to the one who had ten talents.

This can be found in Matthew 25:14-28.
8. For how much money was Joseph sold into slavery by his brothers, according to the NIV?

Answer: Twenty shekels of silver

Joseph's brothers were jealous of him because their father, Jacob, had given him a coat of many colors. When Jacob sent Joseph into the field where his brothers were working they took his coat and threw him into a cistern. Later they sold him to the Midianites for twenty shekels of silver. They slaughtered a goat and put some of its blood on Joseph's coat and took it to their father, telling him that wild animals had killed him and the coat was all that was left. After this the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, who was one of Pharaoh's officials.

This can be found in Genesis 37:12-36.
9. How much money did Joseph of Arimathea buy Jesus' dead body for?

Answer: He didn't have to pay for it

After Jesus died Joseph went to Pilate and asked for the body. Pilate gave him the body without charging him for it. Joseph then put the body in his tomb and he stayed there for three days. Christians believe that after three days Jesus rose from the grave and 40 days later he was taken to heaven. This can be found in Matthew 27:57-61.
10. When Jesus was in Bethany a women who had lived a sinful life came and anointed Jesus with very expensive perfume. How much money did Judas say she could have sold it for according to the NIV?

Answer: Over a year's wages

After the women anointed Jesus, Judas thought to himself that she could have sold it for over a year's wages and the money given to the poor. Jesus knew he was thinking this and said that what the women was doing was to prepare him for burial. He also said that Judas would always have the poor but he wouldn't always have him.

This can be found in Mark 14:1-9.
