Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to John 4:6, at what location did Jesus meet an unnamed Samaritan woman who had been married five times?

Answer: Well

Well, wouldn't you know it. The correct answer is well, with Scripture stating Jesus met the unnamed Samaritan woman at Jacob's well.

It was during a discourse with the woman at the well that Jesus made the famous declaration, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." (See John 4:13-14)

Verse 17 also states Jesus knew the woman had been married five times before and the man she was living with was not her husband. This even though He had never met her.
2. According to Acts 18:2, Aquila, a native of Pontus, had left a certain country with his wife Priscilla after Claudius ordered the deportation of all the Jews. What's the name of the country?

Answer: Italy

Yes, Italy is the correct answer. Notes in the NIV Study Bible state Claudius served as Emperor of Rome from 41 to 54 AD. All Jews were ordered deported during his reign. Priscilla and Aquila met up with Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, in Corinth. Paul's books 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians are addressed to followers of Christ in Corinth.

Acts 18:1-2 tells of Paul meeting up with Priscilla and Aquila, stating they had recently come from Italy because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome.
3. What was the name of the river that was turned into blood, as per Exodus 7:14-22 in the NIV Bible?

Answer: Nile

The Nile was turned into blood, according to Exodus 7:14-22. (The river is identified in the NIV but not named in the KJV and the NKJV, but obviously it had to be the Nile as it is the only major river in Egypt.) The turning of the water into blood was the first of ten plagues inflicted upon the Egyptians by the LORD, according to Scripture.

After the tenth plague -- the killing of all the firstborn children as well as firstborn animals, as per the 11th chapter of Exodus -- Scripture reports the Pharaoh relented and granted permission to the Israelites to leave.
4. According to Numbers 16:1, who staged a rebellion against Moses and ended up with the earth opening up around him and swallowing him?

Answer: Dathan

Dathan, the son of Eliab, is the correct answer. According to Numbers 16, Dathan and his brother Abirham, along with Korah and On, staged a rebellion against Moses while the Israelites were wandering in the wildnerness, on their way to Canaan.

They paid with their lives for their defiance. Scripture tells of the earth opening up and swallowing the protesters in a case of divine retribution.

Numbers 16:41-50 also tells of other complainers and protesters dying. According to Verse 49, 14,700 people were killed by divine retribution.
5. Out of the four names below, which one was a bitter opponent of Nehemiah and his workers who rebuilt a wall around Jerusalem? (Nehemiah 4:1)

Answer: Sanballat

According to Scripture, Sanballat was "furious and very indignant" when he learned Nehemiah and his workers were rebuilding a wall around Jerusalem. His efforts to stop Nehemiah, however, were in vain. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state that Sanballat was the governor of Samaria. Details about Sanballat can be found in Nehemiah 2:10, 4:7-8 and 6:1-14.
6. In the 47th chapter of Ezekiel, the prophet writes about borders of a restored nation of Israel. According to verse 19, what town was part of the southern border?

Answer: Tamar

I suspect this one may have tripped up some players as Tamar is regarded as the name of two different woman in the Old Testament, and not as a placename. Tamar the town is also mentioned in Ezekiel 48:28. According to Christiananswers.net, Tamar was on the southeastern border of Palestine, and some believe the town was actually known as 'Tadmor'.
7. Out of the place names below, which one was used as an encampment on two different occasions by the Israelites during their wanderings in the wilderness? (Numbers 21:10 and 33:43)

Answer: Oboth

Oboth is the correct answer. However, little is known about it as it is mentioned in passing reference. It was the first encampment after the setting up of a bronze serpent. According to the 21st chapter of Numbers, the LORD sent "fiery serpents" among the people because of their complaining about the lack of help from God and leadership from Moses. Numbers 21:8 tells of the LORD instructing Moses to set up a bronze serpent on a pole so that everyone who was bitten would be saved if they looked at the pole.
8. 2 Samuel 21:10 tells of a concubine of Saul tenderly watching over the corpses of her sons, protecting them from birds and animals. Scripture also states the solemn vigil took place "from the beginning of harvest until the late rains poured on them from heaven." What was the name of the devoted woman?

Answer: Rizpah

Rizpah is the correct answer. 2 Samuel 21 tells of the Gibeonites hanging Rizpah's two sons -- Armoni and Mephibosheth. Scripture goes on to state they were hanged "in the hill before the LORD" in the beginning of the barley harvest.

1 Samuel 21:10, in the NKJV, states: "Now Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until the late rains poured on them from heaven. And she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day nor the beasts of the field by night."

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Rizpah's vigil would've stretched from April to October, or from the beginning of the barley harvest to the late rains.
9. According to Ruth 1:1-4, what was the name of the place Ruth and her sister-in-law Orpah came from?

Answer: Moab

Ruth and sister-in-law Orpah were both from Moab. According to the website Christiananswers.net, Moab was east of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. It bears the modern name of Kerak. (Midian was south of Moab, and Mesopotamia to its east.) Ruth and Orpah were both daughters-in-law of Naomi and when the three women became widows, Orpah opted to return to Moab. Ruth, however, remained with her mother-in-law.

The book of Ruth is largely an account of the romance between Ruth and her second husband, Boaz.

They would become the parents of Obed, who would become the grandfather of King David, as per Ruth 4:17.
10. Now take the first letter of the answers to the nine questions above to come up with a nine letter word that describes a weather phenomenon with which Elijah and Job are connected.

Answer: Windstorm

Job and Elijah are both connected with windstorms.

Job 1:18 tells of Job's seven sons and three daughters dining inside a house when "suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness" and demolished the house, killing the young people inside.

Meanwhile, 1 Kings 19:11-16 tells of Elijah hearing a "still small voice" of the LORD after he witnessed a major windstorm, followed by an earthquake followed by a massive fire. One of the instructions the "still small voice" gave Elijah was to to anoint Elisha as a prophet to replace himself.

Incidentally, the windstorm in 1 Kings 19:12 is described as being "great" and "strong". It was that and very much more, as Scripture says the wind was so powerful it "tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces". No details are given in Scripture about the intensity of the earthquake and the fire. One can only imagine.
