Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was a personal aide to Herod, as per Acts 12:20?

Answer: Blastus

Acts 12:20 states Blastus was a personal aide to Herod. (In the NIV it states he was a "trusted personal servant of the king.") Scripture goes on to state Blastus was befriended by the people to Tyre and Sidon, and they were successful in having a personal audience with Herod. The meeting, however, would be Herod's downfall.

While Herod was speaking, people kept shouting "the voice of a god, not of a man!", according to Acts 12:22. Scripture goes on to tell of an angel "immediately" striking Herod because he did not give glory to God and then he was "eaten by worms and died."

This is the only mention of Blastus in Scripture.
2. Out of the four names below, which one was a king of Israel and reigned wickedly, as per the 16th chapter of 1 Kings?

Answer: Omri

Omri was king of Israel, serving for twelve years. Details about his reign are recorded in 1 Kings 16:21-27. He was made king after Israel was embroiled in a civil war with one faction supporting Tibni son of Ginath for king and the other faction supporting Omri.

Omri, however, was an evil king. According to 1 Kings 16:25-26, in the MKJV, "Omri did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all who were before him."
3. A worker in the early church was deported from Rome because he was a Jew. What was the man's name? (Acts 18:2-3)

Answer: Aquila

Aquila, the husband of Priscilla, is the correct answer. According to Acts 18:2-3, Aquila was ordered to leave Italy by Claudius because he was Jewish. Scripture goes on to tell of Aquila and his wife Priscilla meeting up with the apostle Paul in Corinth. The trio had much in common. In addition to believing in a resurrected Jesus, Aquila, Priscilla and Paul were all tentmakers.

The married couple became key members in the early church, and in Romans 16:3 Paul writes they "risked their necks" for him, but does not provide details.
4. Abigail, a wife of David, was originally married to a man who is described as "harsh and evil" in the NKJV Bible. What was the man's name, as per 1 Samuel 25:3?

Answer: Nabal

According to 1 Samuel 25:3, Abigail was married to Nabal, a man described as "harsh and evil" in the NKJV and "surly and mean" in the NIV. What's more, Abigail in 1 Samuel 25:25, states Nabal was a "scoundrel" and in the NIV his name meant "fool". He might have been a highly unpopular person, but he certainly had his comeuppance. After being rude and obnoxious with David's men, Nabal was struck dead by the LORD, as per 1 Samuel 25:38. Shortly after Nabal's death, Abigail became David's wife. The same chapter states David also married Ahinoam of Jezreel.

In 1 Samuel 25:3, Abigail is described as "of good understanding and beautiful appearance".
5. According to Ruth 1:2, who was the husband of Naomi?

Answer: Elimelech

Elimelech was the husband of Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth. However, not much is known about Elimelech as he is mentioned in passing reference. According to Scripture, he died, leaving Naomi a widow, while his two sons also died, leaving Ruth and Orpah widows.

The sons were named Mahlon and Chilion, according to Ruth 1:2. (In the NIV, Chilion's name appears as Kilion.) However, Scripture does not give any details about the cause of deaths of Elimelech and his two sons.
6. What type of birds fed Elijah for an extended period of time? (1 Kings 17:1-6)

Answer: Ravens

Ravens is the correct answer. Elijah was told by the LORD to go into hiding after he had a confrontation with Ahab, king of Israel. While he was in hiding, Scripture states God commanded ravens to feed Elijah daily. Details can be found in 1 Kings 17:1-6.

Verse 6 states ravens brought Elijah "bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening" to his hiding place, which was by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan.
7. What was the name of Elijah's servant who was struck with leprosy after fraudulently receiving a reward from Namaan? (2 Kings 5:20-27)

Answer: Gehazi

Yes, Gehazi is the correct answer. To make a long story short, after Naaman was cured of leprosy he offered Elisha a reward which the prophet declined. Scripture reports Gehazi caught up with Naaman after his departure and asked to receive a talent of silver and two sets of clothing. Naaman promptly responded to Gehazi's request, giving him two talents of silver and two sets of clothing. Later, Gehazi would deny his actions to Elisha and after he left the prophet's presence, Scripture reports he was leprous, as white as snow.

The account of Gehazi being afflicted with leprosy is found in 2 Kings 5:20-27.
8. What was the name of Samuel's father, as per 1 Samuel 1:19?

Answer: Elkanah

The correct answer is Elkanah. According to 1 Samuel 1:1 he was the son of of Jeroham and lived in Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim. Verse 2 states Elkanah had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. For the longest time, Hannah was unable to conceive while 1 Samuel 1:4 states Peninnah was the mother of sons and daughters.

Elkanah was devout as Scripture tells of him going annually to "worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh."
9. Out of the four names below, which woman, going strictly by Scripture, was a follower of Jesus? (Luke 8:3)

Answer: Susanna

Susanna is the correct answer, but little is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference. Luke 8:1-3 tells of Jesus being accompanied by the Twelve Disciples as well as Mary Magdalene, Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna "and many others who provided for Him from their substance." Susanna's name appears only once in the Bible, in this passage in the Gospel of Luke.
10. Now take the first letter of each answer to come up with a nickname found in the New Testament.

Answer: Boanerges

Jesus called John and James 'Boanerges', which means Sons of Thunder. Mark 3:16-19, in the NKJV Bible, gives a list of the names of the Twelve Disciples in which James and John are identified as both sons of Zebedee and Boanerges: "Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, 'Sons of Thunder'; Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him."

Notes in the NIV Study Bible state the brothers were called Sons of Thunder because it was "probably descriptive of their dispositions."

The term Boanerges can be found in only this passage in Mark in the entire Bible, using the KJV, NKJV or the NIV.
