Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to New Testament Scripture, Rahab, the famous prostitute of Jericho, married an Israelite, and they had a child named Boaz. What was the name of Rahab's husband? (Matthew 1:5)

Answer: Salmon

Salmon is the correct answer. The genealogy of Christ as documented in Matthew makes mention of Salmon and Rahab being the parents of Boaz. Boaz, of course, would go on to become the husband of Ruth. Matthew 1:5 states: "Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse."

Others, however, dispute the claim it was the same Rahab who hid the Jews at Jericho. They point out the time frame simply doesn't add up.
2. Who was the worker in the early church who was tutored by Priscilla and Aquila and is described as an "eloquent" man who was "mighty in the Scriptures"? (Acts 18:24-26)

Answer: Apollos

Apollos was tutored by Priscilla and Aquila, the dynamic husband-wife team in the New Testament. Acts 18:24-26, in the NKJV, describes Apollos as a "an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures." Verses 27-28 go on to state that in Achaia "he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ." Achaia is an area in Greece.

The passage also states Apollos was born in Alexandria and linked up with Priscilla and Aquila in Ephesus.
3. Lapidoth's wife was a dynamic judge of Israel and a prophetess. What was her name? (Judges 4:4)

Answer: Deborah

Deborah is the correct answer. There's no doubt she was a spark plug who made things happen. Her story is told in the fourth and fifth chapters of Judges. According to Judges 4:2, Jabin king of Canaan ruled over the Israelites, who were cruelly oppressed by Sisera, the commander of his army. Things changed dramatically, however, when Deborah rose to power.

The Israelites, led by Deborah and her general Barak, scored a decisive military victory over Sisera and their freedom was gained. According to Judges 4:16, "all Sisera's troops fell by the sword; not a man was left." Notes in the NIV Study Bible indicate Deborah was the only judge referred to as a prophetess. And according to Wikipedia, she was the "fourth, and the only female, Judge of pre-monarchic Israel in the Old Testament (Tanakh)." Little is known about her husband Lappidoth as he is mentioned only in passing reference.
4. Felix was a Roman governor who had Paul appear before him. According to Acts 24:24, the wife of Felix was a Jew. What was her name?

Answer: Drusilla

Drusilla was a Jewish woman who was married to Felix, governor of Judea when the apostle Paul appeared before him. According to the Website Biblical-Baby-Names.com Drusilla means 'watered by the dew.' The same Website states she was the daughter of Herod Agrippa.

The Website goes on to report: "Felix, the Roman procurator of Judea, induced her to leave her husband, Azizus, the king of Emesa, and become his wife. She was present with Felix when Paul reasoned of 'righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come' (Acts 24:24). She and her son perished in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, A.D. 79."
5. Who does Paul describe as "our fellow worker in Christ", as per Romans 16:9 in the NKJV?

Answer: Urbanus

Urbanus is described by Paul in Romans 16:9 as "our fellow worker in Christ". (In the NIV, he is described as a "co-worker.") However, not much is known about Urbanus as he is mentioned in only this verse in Scripture. In the NKJV Bible, Paul simply states: "Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and Stachys, my beloved." In total, Paul extends greetings to twenty-nine people in the sixteenth chapter of Romans, with ten of them being women.
6. According to Ruth 1, Naomi was married to Elimelech and they had two sons. Scripture goes on to state Naomi's husband and her two sons died. One of the sons was named Mahlon and he was married to Ruth. What was the name of the second son who was married to Orpah, as per Ruth 1:2 in the KJV and the NKJV? (In the NIV, the spelling of the name is slightly different.)

Answer: Chilion

Naomi was the mother of two boys, Mahlon and Chilion. (In the NIV Bible, Chilion is spelled as Kilion.) However, not much is known about her two sons as they are mentioned in passing reference. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Mahlon and Chilion mean 'Sickly' and 'Failing'. According to 4:10, Ruth was married to Mahlon.

As a result, it is safe to state Chilion was married to Orpah. The Web site Christiananswers.net states Ruth means 'Friend' while Orpah means 'Forelock' or 'Fawn'.
7. Which prophet of God was suddenly taken up by a whirlwind into heaven while walking along with his friend? (2 Kings 2:11-13)

Answer: Elijah

Elijah's sudden departure is recorded in 2 Kings 2:11-12, while he was walking along with the prophet Elisha. The NKJV Bible records Elijah being taken up to heaven in this way: "Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, 'My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!' So he saw him no more."

Elijah is well known for many things, but perhaps the best known story involving him is his duel with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, as recorded in the 18th chapter of 1 Kings.
8. As per Genesis 15:2, what was the name of Abraham's servant who hailed from Damascus?

Answer: Eliezer

Eliezer came from Damascus, as per Genesis 15:2. Many theologians believe Eliezer was the unnamed senior servant who found a wife for Isaac. In Genesis 24, the unnamed servant is requested by Abraham to go to the land of his relatives to get a wife for his son.

Genesis 24:12-14 tells of the servant praying in this matter. The passage, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then he said, 'O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, 'Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink' -- let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master."

Verse 15 goes on to state that before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. The rest, as they say, is history.
9. What's the name of the worker in the early church who was stripped, beaten and severely flogged and after being thrown into prison with Paul, sang hymns to God at midnight? (Acts 16:16-40).

Answer: Silas

Silas was a remarkable man and his imprisonment with Paul at Philiippi is extra remarkable. According to Acts 16:16-40, Silas and Paul ended up before the magistrates after they drove demons out of a slave girl who was capable of telling people's fortunes. With the demons no longer living in her, she lost the ability to tell fortunes and her owners were furious as she brought them much profit.

Acts 16:19 states the owners of the slave girl seized Paul and Silas and "dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities". And this is where things turned ugly. Scripture states a crowd ended up attacking the two church workers and after they were stripped, flogged and severely beaten, they were thrown into prison. Despite their condition, Silas and Paul "were praying and singing hymns to God" shortly after midnight while with their feet in stocks!

Then a miracle took place. According to Scripture there was an earthquake and "immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed." And then things get even more incredible. The dynamic duo stayed put and did not make a break for it. When the jailer was amazed to find out his prized prisoners had not escaped, Silas and Paul seized the opportunity to convert him to Christianity. Acts 16:34 states the jailer's entire household came to believe in God.

10. Now take the first letter from each answer to come up with a nine-letter name for a group of people mentioned in the New Testament.

Answer: Sadducees

The correct answer is Sadducees, a group of people known for confronting Jesus in the New Testament.

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, little is actually known about the Sadducees today except what rival groups said about them, as their writings have not survived through the ages.

However, it is known the Sadducees based their beliefs solely on the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament.

"They did not accept the authority of any other Old Testament books and did not find a basis in the Pentateuch for a belief in angels, demons or an afterlife," notes in the NKJV Study Bible state.

The notes go on to state: "They were an aristocratic group in Israel that dominated the higher levels of the priesthood. As landowners, they achieved their power and status from their class and position as priests, while the Pharisees derived their status mostly from their learning."
