Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Also known as the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which parody religion was created in 2005 by Bobby Henderson?

Answer: Pastafarianism

Bobby Henderson created the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as part of a response to the Kansas School Board's decision to introduce the teaching of intelligent design as a part of the science education program. Pastafarians believe that global warming and other natural disasters are caused by the shrinking numbers of pirates since the 1800s. Pirate regalia is also the chosen garb of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and Pastafarians. Bobby Hendersons' open letter to the Kansas School Board can be read at several sites on the web. Just do a quick search and you will be able to find it easily.
2. There are several religions parodying Scientology, but which of the following is NOT considered one of them?

Answer: Last Thursdayism

Last Thursdayism claims that the world may have been created last Thursday, but with the appearance of age (ie, memories, history books, fossils, etc). The headline, "Last Thursdayism proven!" (November 2, 1992) was the first known written reference to Last Thursdayism.
"As everyone knows, it was predicted that the world would end last Wednesday at 10:00 PST. Since there appears to be a world in existence now, the entire universe must therefore have been recreated, complete with an apparent "history", last *Thursday*. QED" (from Wikipedia and the talk.origins newsgroup).
Blaintology is a parody religion featured in the TV show 'South Park', specifically in the episode 'Super Best Friends'. Eventualism is a religion used in the movie 'Schizopolis' (released in 1996) and is a direct reference to Scientology, and Church of the SubGenius parodies several religions with Scientology being a main one.
3. Created by George Carlin, which parody religion makes reference to a child's playtoy?

Answer: Frisbeetarianism

Frisbeetarianism is the philosophy that "when you die, your soul goes up on a roof and gets stuck" and was created in 1975 by George Carlin, who openly and regularly denounced the idea of a god. According to the allexperts encyclopedia, there is a lesser known aspect of the religion known as 'The Ascension', which is "where someone comes along with a ladder and collects all the souls".

There is no clarity, however, as to what happens next...
4. In which comic strip do characters have an almost religious belief in the Great Pumpkin?

Answer: Peanuts

Linus's belief in the Great Pumpkin has been interpreted as a parody of Christian evangelism. The Great Pumpkin was first mentioned in 1959 and is a figure comparable to the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. On Halloween night each year, Linus sits in a pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin to appear. 'It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown' - 1966 animated television special - re-iterated a quote from Linus, originally from the comic strip and regarding the Great Pumpkin: "There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin."
5. Seen as a parody of Protestant reformed churches, in which animated town do the inhabitants attend the Protestant Christian church The Western Branch of American Reform Presbylutherianism?

Answer: Springfield

Although not the only church in Springfield, The Western Branch of American Reform Presbylutherianism is the one which is mostly seen in episodes of 'The Simpsons'. According to Wikipedia, the Presbylutherians officially split from an un-named church over their right to attend church with wet hair; this was in 1573.
Metropolis, Gotham City, and Superbia are all fictional cities created by DC Comics.
6. The cult of a (deceased) pop icon translates his songs into parody scriptures and believes that following these translations will create peace on earth and lead to an enlightened life. What musician is their focus?

Answer: The Cult of Michael Jackson

From the Cult of Michael Jackson website:
"10 Laws of the Boogie:
1. You shall have no other pop Gods or Kings before MJ.
2. You shall strive to make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth, you shall boogie and keep thy faith and strive to be all that you can be.
3. You shall blame it on the boogie, knowing you are a dancin' machine and scream thy name.
4. Observe the nine to five day, and then at night you shall enjoy yourself, groove as the MJ commands you.
5. Start with the man in the mirror, honor yourself, make your father proud and your mother smile, love everyone, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that thy idol MJ is commanding thee to enjoy.
6. You shall obey the rule that nobody shall hurt anybody else.
7. You shall not stop until you get enough.
8. Nor shall you be a smooth criminal, nor a macho man, and when in doubt just beat it.
9. Neither shall you victimize or scheme, upon penalty of a scream. Be careful of what you do, 'cause the lie becomes the truth. Before you judge, try hard to love.
10. Your girl is yours and my girl is mine. Neither shall you be a Billie Jean or cause a scene. Do as your mother says and be careful of who you love."
7. Which religion, based on a popular search engine, has a list of 'nine proofs', proving the existence of their god?

Answer: Googlism

The nine proofs of Googlism state that Google is (among other things) omnipresent, omniscient and immortal and therefore exhibits many of the characteristics traditionally associated with a god, yet in a scientific manner. Google.com was registered on September 14th, therefore Google Appreciation Day occurs on September 14th of each year. According to thechurchofgoogle website, "Google Appreciation Day's main purpose is to better the lives of those who celebrate it by encouraging the acquisition of knowledge, which will eventually lead to the betterment of one's life." For more information on Googlism, go to thechurchofgoogle website.
8. Which Argentinian football (soccer) player - famous in the mid-late 20th century - has had fans create a religion in his name?

Answer: Diego Maradona

Iglesia Maradoniana (Maradonian Church) was created in 1998 on Maradona's 38th birthday. It was created by fans of Diego Maradona who they believe to be the best football player of all time. Years are counted since his birth. For instance, the year 2009 is 49AB (After Birth). The Ten Commandments of Iglesia Maradiniana are:
"1. The ball must not be stained, as D10S has proclaimed
2. Love football over all things
3. Declare your unconditional love of football
4. Defend the colours of Argentina
5. Preach the words of D10S all over the world
6. Pray in the temples where he preached and on his sacred mantles
7. Don't proclaim the name of Diego in name of [any one] club.
8. Follow the teachings of the Maradonian Church
9. Let Diego be thy name, and one of thy children['s names]
10. 'No ser cabeza de termo y que no se te escape la tortuga.' (Meaning, donīt be a hot head and keep it in your pants)". (Wikipedia)
Gabriel Omar Batistuta is regarded as one of the best Argentinian football players of all time. He was selected for the Argentinian side at around the time Maradona retired. David Beckham is British and Tim Cahill is Australian (both are football players, well known in their respective countries).
9. Based on a character from the 1998 film 'The Big Lebowski', which parody religion explains its "worldview" in 'The Take it Easy Manifesto'?

Answer: Dudeism

Followers of Dudeism prefer to use the term 'worldview' instead of 'faith'. Dudeism was founded by Oliver Benjamin in 2005 and is officially called 'The Church of the Latter-Day Dude'. The main objective for Dudeism is to promote the lifestyle and philosophy of 'the Dude' (a character in 'The Big Lebowski' - a Coen Brothers film from 1998). Taoism is recognised by Dudists as an early version of Dudeism.

The basic idea of Dudeism is spelled out on the Dudeism website - "Life is short and complicated and nobody knows what to do about it. So don't do anything about it. Just take it easy, man. Stop worrying so much whether you'll make it into the finals. Kick back with some friends and some oat soda and, whether you roll strikes or gutters, do your best to be true to yourself and others - that is to say, abide".
10. A parody herself, which 'goddess' is used by atheists and religious skeptics to argue against the existence of a god (or gods) of other religious groups?

Answer: The Invisible Pink Unicorn

The Invisible Pink Unicorn was 'revealed' in 1994 and is referred to as an equivalent to 'Russell's teapot' and Carl Sagan's 'The Dragon in my Garage'. The Invisible Pink Unicorn website states that "Invisible Pink Unicorns are beings of great spiritual power. We know this because they are capable of being invisible and pink at the same time. Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them". Due to the fact that she is invisible, it is impossible to prove that she doesn't exist, therefore she only exists to those who 'believe'. Followers of the Invisible Pink Unicorn use this maxim to equate their faith to those of more mainstream religions.
The Purple Oyster (of Doom) is purported to be a former minion of the Invisible Pink Unicorn and bears a remarkable similarity to Satan. I made up The Bright Blue Frog and The Canary Yellow Walrus for the purposes of this question.
More information regarding this goddess/symbol can be found on the Invisible Pink Unicorn website.
