Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first officially ordained high priest of the ancient Hebrews?

Answer: Aaron

Aaron, brother of Moses, was ordained in a holy ceremony in the wilderness of Sinai. The details can be found in Leviticus 8 (KJV). This was after Aaron was coerced into making a golden calf for the Israelites to worship, which was a big wrongdoing in the sight of God. He was forgiven, though. Aaron died on Mount Hor before reaching the Promised Land (Numbers 20:23-29, KJV)
2. According to the King James Bible, what type of plant grew where the prophet Jonah was sitting outside of Nineveh?

Answer: gourd

Different Bible version have give various descriptions of this plant. Some translate it as a gourd (as in the King James), in some it is a vine or ivy (NIV and Douay-Rheims Bible) and others it is simply "a plant". It is mentioned in Jonah 4:6.
3. What was the name of the priest that helped David when David was fleeing from the unfounded wrath of King Saul?

Answer: Ahimelech

David came alone to the alarmed Ahlimelech and asked for food. There was no common bread available, so the priest gave David the holy bread of the sanctuary and also the sword of Goliath that was kept there. This can be read in 1 Samuel 21 (KJV).
4. Which prophet had a hot coal from the temple's altar pressed to his lips when given his holy commission?

Answer: Isaiah

This is referenced in Isaiah 6:6. Isaiah felt he was a man of unclean lips, so an angel brought a coal from the holy altar and touched Isaiah and symbolically cleansed him with it. Isaiah went on to give prophecies of the coming Messiah (7:14, 40:3-5, 52:14, 53: 1-12, amongst others in the KJV).
5. Who was the first priest to be re-instated after the Hebrews returned from their Babylonian exile?

Answer: Joshua

This priest is mentioned several times in the books of Zechariah and Ezra. Joshua (or Jeshua), the son of Josedech, and his kinsmen rebuilt the sacred altar and made sacrifices; rites which hadn't been performed for many years (Ezra 3:2). This served to spiritually strengthen and encourage the returning Hebrews to keep re-building the ruined city of Jerusalem.

A description of his ordination is found in Zechariah 6:9-14 (KJV).
6. Gehazi was an assistant to which prophet?

Answer: Elisha

Although Gehazi helped the prophet Elisha, he had an avaricious side. After Elisha healed Naaman the Syrian of his leprosy, Elisha would not take any reward, but Gehazi met with Naaman in secret and asked for recompense. When Elisha learned of it, the leprosy came on Gehazi. 2 Kings 5 (KJV).
7. What were the names of the sons of high priest Eli, whom Samuel prophesied against?

Answer: Hophni and Phinehas

Samuel was assisting priest Eli when God sent a message to him while he was sleeping. The message told that Eli and his descendants would no longer be allowed to be priests because his sons, Hophni and Phinehas, has corrupted their offices. The sons were killed in a battle against the Philistines and the Ark of the Covenant was captured.

When Eli heard the news, he fell dead. 1 Samuel 3-4 (KJV).
8. Who were prophet Elijah's primary Biblical adversaries?

Answer: King Ahab and Queen Jezebel

Elijah never had any beneficent prophecies for Ahab and Jezebel who worshiped the false god, Baal. Ahab threatened Elijah who had predicted a long drought on the land. Elijah had to go into hiding for a while and stayed beside the brook of Cherith where ravens brought food to him (1 Kings 17:1-6, KJV). Elijah also had a dust up with Jezebel and her priests and predicted a gristly death for the wicked queen.

Many references to Elijah can be found throughout 1 Kings.
9. Besides Jesus, who is the only other prophet active in the New Testament?

Answer: John the Baptist

While Stephen, Philip and Paul were good and true men of God, they were more evangelists than prophets. John the Baptist was the last of the prophets whose job was to prepare the way for the Messiah. Matthew 3:1-6, Mark 1:2-8, Luke 3:1-7, John 1:15-27 (KJV). John lived in the wilderness by the Jordan River, dressed in camel skins and leather, and ate locusts and honey (Matthew 3:1-4, KJV).
10. In the New Testament, what relationship did the high priest Caiaphas have to high priest Annas?

Answer: son-in-law

Annas was high priest in Judea from 6 to 15 CE and Caiaphas held the position from 18-36 CE. Apparently Caiaphas consulted Annas on occasion. John 18:13. Caiphas was the high priest that officiated at the trial of Jesus (Matthew 26:57) and handed Jesus over to Pilate.
