Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This man was the husband of Naomi.

Answer: Who was Elimelech?

Ruth 1:2. Elimelech took his family out of the land of Israel due to a famine. They traveled to Moab and Elimelech died there along with his two sons, Chilion and Mahlon
2. This is Ruth's sister-in-law.

Answer: Who was Orpah?

Ruth 1:4. This daughter-in-law returned to her homeland while Ruth chose to stay with Naomi and go to live in Israel.
3. This is the town where Naomi was from.

Answer: What is Bethlehem?

Ruth 1:1 & 19. The city of Bethlehem figures prominently in scripture. The name means "House of Bread," and it is the birth place of Jesus who was the bread of life. This was prophesied by the prophet Micah.
4. This is the name that Naomi said she wished to be known by because of the troubles that came in her life.

Answer: What is Mara?

Ruth 1:20. In Biblical times, people often changed their name based on circumstances in their life. In telling people to call her Mara, she was letting people know that she was not the same person she used to be.
5. This man was a kinsman of Elimelech.

Answer: Who was Boaz?

Ruth 2:1. I know this was rather easy, but Ruth is a short book and I want to get ten questions. Boaz was a wealthy man with a lot of influence. He was deeply moved by Ruth's devotion to her mother-in-law. He granted her privileges while gathering grain.
6. This is the crop that was being harvested when Ruth came to Boaz's field.

Answer: What is barley?

Ruth 2:23. Ruth came during the barley and wheat harvest. According to the law, the gleanings of the harvest, which was what was missed by the reapers, were to be left for the poor and the widows. The reapers were not to go over the fields a second time. Ruth was both a widow and poor.
7. This is what Ruth requested from Boaz.

Answer: What is to be a kinsman redeemer?

Ruth 3:9. During Biblical times if a married man died without leaving any children, then the nearest male relative was to marry the widow and raise up a child in the dead man's name. This was known as a kinsman redeemer. Naomi, knowing that Boaz was a near kinsman, instructed Ruth to make this request of Boaz.
8. This was exchanged to confirm either redeeming or changing in Israel.

Answer: What is a shoe?

Ruth 4:7. In order to confirm the change in the redemption to another, a shoe was exchanged, signifying that the nearest kinsman forfeited his right as redeemer to the kinsman who was next in line.
9. This is how much barley Boaz gave to Ruth as a token in response to her request.

Answer: What is six measures?

Ruth 3:15. This was done to signify that Boaz was willing to accept the duty as kinsman redeemer. The grain was a dowry for Ruth's mother-in-law.
10. This man was the father of Boaz.

Answer: Who was Salmon?

Ruth 4:21. These are all included in the genealogy of Jesus. The story of Ruth is a beautiful story of redemption and pictures how Jesus is our kinsman redeemer and paid the price needed to purchase the lost and bring salvation to mankind.
