Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sower. This is the story of a man who sowed seeds which fell on different kinds of ground, each of which affected its growth. Jesus likened this ground to people hearing his teaching. Which sort of ground represented the people who did not want to believe?

Answer: Stony ground

Jesus explained that the seed that fell on stony ground or pathways was eaten by birds. This represents people who do not want to hear or understand, or let the teaching enter their minds.
The bushes represent all the other things that take up people's attention and prevent them from heeding the teachings.
In the shallow soil, the seeds put down roots, but they do not have any depth to grow, representing people who listen eagerly at first, but let their attention wander away so that they forget.
The good soil represents those who listen and learn.
See Matthew 13, starting at verse 24.
2. The Prodigal Son. In this story the son takes his inheritance and leaves home. When his money is gone and he is starving he goes home to ask his father for a place as a servant. Instead his father welcomes him with open arms. What is the message of this parable?

Answer: Forgiveness

Jesus teaches that God forgives anyone who repents. Here the father represents God and is joyful to receive his son home again. It is a story of reassurance and joy.
See Luke 15, starting at verse 11.
3. The Good Samaritan. When a traveler is set upon by thieves and left badly injured, some travelers pass by on the other side of the road. A Samaritan is the one who stops to help. What question was this story intended to answer?

Answer: Who is my neighbour?

The Samaritans were not well esteemed by the Jews so it was surprising that a Samaritan bothered to help. Yet, he, of all the travelers, acted like a neighbour to the injured man. Jesus wanted to show that all men deserve equal treatment.
See Matthew 21, starting at verse 28.
4. The Friend at Midnight. Here a man is seeking to borrow food to feed a late night visitor. His neighbour at first refuses to get out of bed, but because of the continual knocking, eventually goes to the door. Why does the petitioner choose this house to beg at?

Answer: Because it belongs to his friend

This is not easy to understand, but Jesus says that the man had to keep asking to get what he wanted. God does not always answer prayers at the first request. The timing might be wrong, or there might be ways for the supplicant to answer the prayer through his own effort, or the supplicant may alter his viewpoint on what is needed, so it is important not to give up and think that God is not listening or has said "No". The parable says it is right to keep praying for what you need.
See Luke 11, starting at verse 5.
5. The Parable of the Talents. A rich man, going away on business, gives money to his servants, expecting them to invest it and make a profit. Two of them do, and double the money, but what does the third, being wary of losing the capital, do with it?

Answer: Buries it

It is interesting to note that the coins in question were called "talents". This gives an extra meaning to the parable in the English language.
Money is no use if it is buried. Inflation is not a new concept and buried cash can lose its value, so the servant might well have returned an amount of lower value to his master than he had had at the start.
Jesus is saying that whatever gifts, talents or abilities one has, should be used, not hidden. In popular jargon - use it, or lose it.
See Mathew 25, starting at verse 14.
6. The Pharisee and the Tax Collector. These two men went to the Temple church to pray. The Pharisee stood up and told God, and everyone who could hear him, how good he was. The Tax Collector, one of a despised profession simply asked for forgiveness. Did the Pharisee, with all his good works, please God the most?

Answer: No

Jesus said that the Pharisee had had his reward on earth from the adulation of the people. God was pleased with the man who truly repented of his bad life, and asked forgiveness.

See Luke 15 starting at verse 8.
7. The Mustard Seed. A tiny seed grows into a huge tree. Small actions have great results. What is another saying that means the same?

Answer: Mighty oaks grow from little acorns

This story can refer to teachings, kindnesses, and many other kinds of effort. The Christian faith was very small to begin with, but it has grown into a large church. Similarly, even small deeds of goodness have a way of growing and multiplying.
See Mark 4, starting at verse 30.
8. The Lost Sheep. Even though it was the end of the day, this shepherd went to find the lamb that had not come home with the rest of the flock. What is another name for this parable?

Answer: The Good Shepherd

Jesus is also called the "Good Shepherd" by Christians. He will go hunting for those people who stray from the path of righteousness and will bring them home rejoicing. He never gives up on those who have lost their way in life.

See Matthew 18 starting at verse 12.
9. The Two Houses. Two men went to build themselves houses beside the sea. One built on sand, the other on rock. When the storms came, the houses were attacked by wind, rain and waves. What damage did they sustain?

Answer: The house on rock survived. The house on sand was swept away.

This parable refers to the people who listened to the teachings of Jesus. Those who thought about the teachings and tried to follow them were the ones who built on rock. They found they had mental support for all the trials of life. Others listened but did not hear and were busy with other things, so they did not make the effort to understand. When problems arose the ones who had listened well were able to survive, but the others lost their faith.

See Matthew 7 starting at verse 24.
10. The Two Debtors. In the hierarchy of servants in a large house, the senior servant went to the master and borrowed money. He also lent some to a lower servant. When the debts were due, the senior servant was unable to pay, so the master let him off. He then went to the under servant. What did he say?

Answer: Pay back what you owe me or I will throw you in prison.

The moral here is that God forgives people, so people should forgive those who are indebted to them.
The story ends with the man's fellow servants telling the master what had occurred. The master was very angry and sent the senior servant to prison until he had repaid all that he owed.
See Matthew 17 starting at verse 23.
