quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are no Biblical accounts of Jesus' earthly father "Joseph" saying anything.

Answer: True

Joseph obviously must have said something, but the Bible never records him.
2. The "wise men" were kings who traveled from the East.

Answer: False

This is a common misconception. The Bible never refers to them as being kings! Matthew 2. verses 1 - 13). Some sources call them "magi - or maqi", which was a priestly caste of Persia, and give their names as Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar, but this is not mentioned in the Bible.
3. There were three wise men, who brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Answer: False

They did bring the gifts mentioned, but there is no record of how many "wise men" visited Jesus. Certainly there were three types of gift, but the only thing we know from the Bible is that there were more than one of them! (Matthew 2. verses 1 - 11)
4. Which angel appeared to Joseph to inform him "not to fear, for his wife Mary would conceive a child by the Holy Ghost"?

Answer: The name of the angel is not recorded

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, but there is no record of which angel appeared to Joseph! (Luke 1. verse 26 - 27 and Matthew 1. verse 20)
5. Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem because of a decree by the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus.

Answer: True

They traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem because of Caesars' decree that everyone must be recorded and taxed in their own town. (Luke 2. verses 1 - 4)
6. Both Joseph and Mary were told by an angel that the baby was to be named "Jesus".

Answer: True

Matthew tells us of Joseph's vision, and Luke tells us of Mary's. (Matthew 1. verses 20 - 21 and Luke verses 30 - 31).
7. Bethlehem was also known as "The City of David".

Answer: True

Joseph had to go to Bethlehem for the tax census because he was directly descended from David. (Luke 2. verse 4)
8. Nazareth was a small village at the time of Jesus' birth.

Answer: False

In fact the Bible calls Nazareth a city! (Matthew 2. verse 23 and Luke 1. verse 26). Other Bible versions call Nazareth a town, but definitely not a "small village"!
9. Jesus was born in a stable.

Answer: False

There was "no room at the inn", but nowhere does the Bible mention a stable. (Luke 2. verse 7). It may have been a barn, but was more likely to have been a cave or grotto used for housing animals.
10. What was the name of Jesus' earthly grandfather?

Answer: Jacob

Matthew 1. verse 16.
11. A "host of angels" appeared to the shepherds, but no angels appeared to the wise men.

Answer: True

Matthew 2. verses 1 - 2, and Luke 2. verse 13. The wise men saw a star which somehow guided them to Jesus (Matthew 2. verses 2 - 10), but the shepherds had first seen a single angel, followed later by a host of angels. (Luke 2. verses 8 - 15)
12. The wise men arrived in time to see the baby Jesus in the manger where his mother Mary had placed him.

Answer: False

In fact they arrived some considerable time after Jesus' birth (Matthew 2. verses 1 - 9). The Bible refers to Jesus as "a child" rather than a baby at this time. (Matthew 2. verse 13)
13. What animal did Mary ride on during the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem?

Answer: The Bible doesn't say

There is never any mention of Mary riding an animal. In fact she probably walked as would have been normal for women at that time.
14. On which day following his birth was Jesus formally given his name?

Answer: The 8th day

Although the angel had told Joseph and Mary what He was to be called, His name was actually given to Him at the time of His circumcision, which according to Jewish Law was on the 8th day. (Luke 2. verse 21)
15. A "host of angels" sang to the shepherds on the night of Jesus' birth.

Answer: False

Angels are never recorded as singing in the Bible - they always just speak!
16. The wise men are only mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew.

Answer: True

They are mentioned only in Matthew 2, and nowhere else.
17. Which Gospel(s) do the shepherds appear in?

Answer: Luke

They only appear in Luke's gospel. (Luke 2, verses 8 - 20)
18. Joseph, Mary and Jesus lived in Egypt for several years during his childhood.

Answer: True

Following the visit of the wise men, an angel appeared to Joseph, and warned him to escape to Egypt with his wife and child. This was to escape King Herods' order that all infants under two years of age must be killed. Although Joseph could work, they would have been able to pay for this stay by using the gifts given by the Wise men! They remained in Egypt until Herod had died. (Matthew 2. verses 13 - 19).
19. The angel Gabriel told Mary that Jesus would inherit King David's throne.

Answer: True

She was told He would be given "the throne of his father David", and that He would reign over the house of Jacob forever. (Luke 1. verse 32).
20. The mothers of Jesus and John the Baptist were cousins.

Answer: True

See Luke 1. verse 36. (some versions of the Bible say merely that they were related).
