Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do Catholics call the Pseudepigrapha?

Answer: The Apocrypha

Protestants usually use the term Apocrypha to refer to the Catholic deuterocanonical books (those that are in the Catholic Old Testament but not in the Protestant Old Testament). Protestants then use the term Pseudepigrapha to refer to books that are outside of either canon, while Catholics call these extra-biblical books Apocrypha.
2. When was the first collection of the Pseudepigrapha published in English?

Answer: 1913

It was edited by R.H. Charles and included the Catholic deuterocanonical books as well as several pseudepigraphal books.
3. Who wrote the Pseudepigrapha?

Answer: Jews and Christians

"Pseudepigrapha" means "false inscription" and is the collective label given to the non-canonical religious books that were written by Jews and Christians and often attributed to Biblical characters.
4. When were most of the Pseudepigrapha written?

Answer: 200 BC - 200 AD

The term is generally used to refer to books written in this time frame, which is sometimes also referred to as the "intertestemental period". These books were all written after the last book of the Old Testament was written, but before the New Testament canon was closed.
5. The pseudepigraphal Psalms of what King of Israel look forward to a time when the Messiah will purge the Gentiles from Jerusalem?

Answer: Solomon

The Psalms of Solomon is one of only five surviving Pseudepigraphal writings that contains Jewish (as opposed to Christian) traditions about the Messiah.
6. What book begins, "A copy of the word of Levi"?

Answer: Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs

Levi was one of the twelve sons of Jacob and father of the priestly tribe.
7. What book contains both an account of the fall of the Tower of Babel and of the clash between Cronos and the Titans?

Answer: Sibylline Oracles

This is found in Book 3 of the Sibylline Oracles. Many scholars think the Greek mythology was borrowed from a non-Jewish source and inserted into the Oracles. The Oracles were frequently quoted by the Church Fathers.
8. Which of the following is not a pseudepigraphal work?

Answer: Tobit

Tobit is included in the Catholic Old Testament canon, but not in Protestant or Jewish canons.
9. Which of the following *is* a pseudepigraphal work?

Answer: 3 Maccabees

Judith and 1 Maccabees are both included in Catholic Old Testament. II Samuel is in Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish Bibles (though Jewish Bibles do not divide it from I Samuel). The Pseudepigrapha also contains a 5 Maccabees.
10. What book, though Jewish in origin, was later "christianized" and came to have much influence on later Christian writing and art?

Answer: Testament of Abraham

The Testaments of Abraham, Jacob, and Isaac were very popular among early Christians. The Pseudepigrapha also contains Testaments of Solomon, Moses, Adam, and Job.
