Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jacob had twelve sons with four different women -- Leah, Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah. What's the name of the third son born?

Answer: Levi

Levi was the third son, as per Genesis 29:34. The boy's mother was Leah, the older sister of Rachel. According to Scripture, Jacob loved Rachel and Leah felt unloved. Genesis 29:32, in the NKJV, states, "when the LORD saw Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren." Verse 34 states: "She conceived again and bore a son, and said, 'Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons'. Therefore his name was called Levi." According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, Levi literally means 'attached'.

Levi was a founder of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Levi is perhaps best known for avenging the defilement of his sister Dinah by going on a mass killing spree against the men of Shechem. He was accompanied by Simeon in the bloody avenging. (Genesis 34:25-31)
2. Rehoboam was the first king of Judah and he was followed by his son Abijam. Who was the third king of Judah, as per 1 Kings 15:9 and 2 Chronicles 14:1?

Answer: Asa

Asa is the correct answer. According to 1 Kings 15:11, Asa did "what was right in the eyes of the LORD." Scripture states he reigned 41 years in Jerusalem.

According to 2 Chronicles 16:12, Asa became diseased in his feet during the 39th year of his reign. Scripture states "his malady was severe; yet in his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians." The following chapter tells of Asa being replaced as king by his son Jehoshaphat.
3. In the Hebrew Bible they're known as the Twelve Prophets and in the English Bible as the Minor Prophets. The section starts with Hosea and is followed by Joel. What's the third book? (The Septuagint of the Eastern churches has a slightly different order.)

Answer: Amos

Amos is the correct answer. Here's the order the books appear in the Twelve Prophets, or the Minor Prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.

(According to Wikipedia, the Septuagint of the Eastern churches has this order: Hosea, Amos, Micah, Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Wikipedia goes on to state the Septuagint of the Eastern churches also puts the Minor Prophets before, instead of after, the 'Major Prophets'.)

According to Amos 1:1, the writer of the book was a sheepbreeder from Tekoa, a community just southwest of Jerusalem. Scripture also states he was a prophet during the reigns of Uzziah in Judah and Jeorobam in Israel. The book reminds the Israelites of God's retributive justice and calls on them to repent.
4. According to Scripture, Sarah was barren for at least twenty years and then was able to conceive after her husband Abraham called on the name of the LORD. Scripture also tells of Rebekah being able to conceive after divine intervention. What is the name of the third woman in the Old Testament who was barren for a number of years and was able to conceive after divine intervention, as per Genesis 30:22?

Answer: Rachel

Rachel is the correct answer. She was barren for a number of years while her sister Leah, who was also married to Jacob was bearing children.

In Genesis 30:1, there is a suggestion Rachel was so distraught at being unable to conceive she was contemplating suicide. In the NIV Bible, it states: "When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, 'Give me children, or I'll die'!" Genesis 30:22 states God remembered Rachel and He enabled her to conceive. She gave birth to a son who she named Joseph. Ironically, Rachel would give birth to another son, Benjamin, and die during childbirth making her statement 'give me children or I will die' extremely prophetic.

It should be pointed out Rachel's sister Leah was also able to conceive because of divine intervention. Genesis 29:31, in the NKJV Bible, states: "When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren."

And on this topic, other women were able to conceive after Sarah and before Rachel because of divine intervention, according to Scripture. Genesis 20:17-18, in the NIV Bible states: "Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again, for the LORD had kept all the women in Abimelek's household from conceiving because of Abraham's wife Sarah."

However, with the question being based on a specific woman being unable to conceive for a number of years, Rachel is the correct answer.
5. The second chapter of Genesis tells of a river flowing through the Garden of Eden before branching into four different rivers. The first river is the Pishon, the second is the Gihon and the fourth is the Euphrates. According to Genesis 2:14, what is the name of the third river?

Answer: The Tigris

The Tigris is correct. The river begins in Turkey and flows through Iraq. It also forms the border between Syria and Iraq.

In addition to being mentioned in Genesis 2:14, the Tigris is also mentioned in Daniel 10:4. It's in this passage Daniel writes about having a vision while "standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris."

According to Wikipedia, the Tigris River is the eastern member of the two great rivers that define Mesopotamia, the other being the Euphrates.

The Tigris also flows through Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.
6. According to Genesis 40:20-22, the chief cupbearer was restored to his position and the chief baker was hanged on the third day of an Egyptian official's birthday. Who was enjoying the third day of the birthday celebrations when these two events took place?

Answer: Pharaoh

The correct answer is the Pharaoh. The fates of the cupbearer and the baker were accurately predicted by Joseph who was imprisoned with the two men. Joseph, of course, was able to predict the fates of the two men when he interpreted their dreams.

Genesis 40:20-22, in the NIV Bible, states: "Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh's hand -- but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation."

Later, Joseph would be called upon to interpret the Pharaoh's dreams. The Pharaoh ended up being so impressed with Joseph's interpretations that he made him the second most powerful man in Egypt.
7. According to the Old Testament, the third year was an important year for the Israelites. The following verse, from the NIV Bible, states: "When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow..." What book in the Old Testament do you find this passage?

Answer: Deuteronomy

The passage in question is from Deuteronomy 26:12. Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Pentateuch and follows Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state the book is largely devoted to explaining God's law revealed at Mount Sinai to a second generation of Israelites.

The traditional belief of Jews and Christians is that Moses wrote Deuteronomy, but some scholars challenge that belief.
8. The disciple John is traditionally credited with writing five books in the New Testament. In the order the books appear, what's the third book?

Answer: 2 John

The correct answer is 2 John. The books John is credited with writing appear in the following order: Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and Revelation.

2 John, in the NIV, is addressed to the "lady chosen by God and to her children." In the NKJV, it is addressed to "the elect lady and her children." The book consists of only 13 verses and warns about false teachers.
9. In the Beatitudes in the fifth chapter of Matthew, Jesus starts by saying blessed are the poor in spirit and those who mourn. What's the third group Jesus says are blessed?

Answer: The meek

The correct answer is the meek. Known as the Beatitudes, the Scripture is some of the most popular in the New Testament.

It's absolutely beautiful Scripture and I couldn't resist the temptation of run the Beatitudes in their entirety. It's from Matthew 5:1-11 and this is from the NKJ Version Bible:

"And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.'"
10. In Revelation, John of Patmos writes about a divine message to seven different churches ranging from Ephesus to Laodicea. What's the name of the third church, as per Revelation 2:12 in the NIV Bible? (The KJV and the NKJV have a slightly different spelling of the name.)

Answer: Pergamum

The correct answer is Pergamum. (In the KJV and the NKJV, it's referred to as Pergamos.)

According to the Web site Christiananswers.net, Pergamum was the chief city of Mysia, in Asia Minor. (The area is now present day Turkey.) The Web site also reports Pergamum city stood on the banks of the river Caicus, about 20 miles from the sea.

The church is rebuked for its compromising stand.

Revelation 2:13-17, in the NKJV, states: "And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write, 'These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword: I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.'"
