Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Exodus chapter 1, what gave Pharaoh concern about the tribes of Israel?

Answer: They were more and mightier than the Egyptians

As the book of Exodus started, there was a distinct difference in how Joseph's family was viewed. The Pharaoh in Exodus 1 knew or remembered not the great things Joseph did to save Egypt from the great famine. In verse 1:9, Pharaoh said to his people, "Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we." Apparently, up to this time, the Israelites were not in bondage.
2. Pharaoh had a change of heart about releasing the Israelites after the final plague, and chose to pursue them to enslave them again. How many chariots Pharaoh used in the pursuit of the Israelites in total is unknown. But Exodus 14:7 specified a certain amount of chosen chariots, most likely fitted for battle. How many chosen chariots were there?

Answer: 600

In Exodus 14:7, the Bible recorded that 600 choice chariots were used, as well as others. The choice chariots were most likely strongly built to endure the rigors of battle. This verse suggests there were others, but perhaps they were used merely for transportation purposes.
3. When Joshua led the Israelites into battle against the Amalekites, Moses oversaw the battle from a hilltop. When Moses' hands were raised, the Israelites prevailed, but when Moses lowered his arms, the enemy prevailed. To give Israel the victory, Aaron and what other Israelite helped Moses to keep his arms raised?

Answer: Hur

In Exodus 17:11-12, the writer said; "And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Am'a-lek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun."
4. According to Exodus, in what month was the feast of unleavened bread to be celebrated, as it corresponded to the Israelites' flight from Egypt?

Answer: Abib

According to Exodus 23:15, the children of Israel were to celebrate the Feast as a remembrance to leaving Egypt in haste, thus the unleavened bread. The point was they didn't even have time to let their bread rise, so no yeast was used in preparation. Leaven was also a symbol of corruption, so when celebrating the feast, all leavening agents would have to be purged from the household.
5. After seeing the molten calf the Aaron and the Israelites had made, Moses broke the tablets he had brought down the mountain with him. Moses gathered men who were true to God and slew many in the camp that had resorted to idolatry. How many were slain that day?

Answer: about 3,000 men

Moses breaking the tablets was symbolic of the Israelites breaking their covenant with God. In Exodus 32:26-28, the Bible stated that all the sons of Levi did according to Moses' command. In verse 28, the Bible recorded that about 3000 men were slain.
6. Despite Pharaoh's efforts at increasing the Israelites' burden, the people continued to flourish. What else did Pharaoh do to attempt to slow the growth of the Israelites?

Answer: Instructed the midwives to kill male babies

Pharaoh feared the Israelites would overpower the Egyptians by sheer numbers. He assumed that, after he increased their labors, they would be too tired to procreate, or more would die from exertion than were born. No matter what Pharaoh did, the Israelites prospered, so in Exodus 1:16 he instructed the Hebrew midwives to kill the male babies.
7. After Moses stretched his hand over the sea in order to part the waters, the Lord caused a strong wind to blow. From which direction did the wind come?

Answer: East

Exodus 14:21 reported, "And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided".
8. Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, heard of the wonders God had performed for the nation of Israel through Moses. Jethro journeyed into the wilderness to meet Moses and reunite with Moses' wife Zipporah and his two sons. One son was named Gershom. What was the other son's name?

Answer: Eliezer

Exodus 18:3-4 recorded the names of the two sons of Moses and Zipporah.
9. In Exodus 23, how many times a year did God require the men of the congregation of Israel to appear before Him to make offerings?

Answer: 3

Exodus 23:15-16 named three times the men must bring offerings unto God. These included the feast of unleavened bread, the feast of the harvest (firstfruits), and the feast of the ingathering (the end of the harvest). Verse 23:17 says, "Three times a year all thy males shall appear before the Lord God."
10. Much work had to be done to prepare the tabernacle of God. In Chapter 31, whom did God appoint over the workmanship of all the things constructed from the furniture to the ark of the covenant?

Answer: Bezaleel

Exodus 31:1-4 "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise cunning works, to work in gold and in silver, and in brass." God also named others who would help in the great task, but blessed Bezaleel with the knowledge of how to instruct and lead.
