Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old was Moses when his mother put him in the Nile to be found by Pharaoh's daughter?

Answer: 3 months

Due to Pharaoh's edict to kill the male Hebrew babies, Moses' mother hid him as long as possible before putting him afloat in a basket, eventually to be found and raised by Pharaoh's daughter. The man God used to bring down the house of Pharaoh was to be raised and educated in his own house. Exodus 2:2 stated Moses' mother hid him for three months.
2. Only three days after they witnessed God's power in delivering them from Pharaoh, the children of Israel murmured against Moses because they had no drinkable water. What was the place named? (Hint: The name comes from the same root word as the name Naomi gave herself after her husband and sons died.)

Answer: Marah

Exodus 15:23 recorded, "and when they came to Ma'rah, they could not drink of the waters of Ma'rah for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Ma'rah." In Ruth 1:20, Naomi took the name Ma'ra because she felt the Lord had dealt with her bitterly.
3. Moses was heavily burdened by the enormous task of mediating the disputes between the children of Israel. Who advised Moses to delegate authority on lesser matters to handpicked men of integrity?

Answer: Jethro

In Exodus 18:14-22, Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, observed the impossible task of mitigating every disagreement the people had with each other. He wisely gave Moses advice to divide duty this amongst trustworthy men so that he would only have to deliberate on the most serious of matters.
4. In Exodus chapter 24, God appeared to more people than just Moses after the people accepted His covenant. What material did the King James Bible describe as being under God's feet?

Answer: Sapphire stone

Exodus 24:10 recorded that after Moses along with the high priests and seventy elders went up to Mount Sinai. "And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness." Though several scriptures say that one can not behold the magnificence of God and live, a partial view, perhaps just His feet, seems to have been visible as the shekinah descended onto Mt. Sinai when Moses went onto the mount to converse with the Lord.

This would also explain the detail of what God was standing on.
5. God gave Moses specific instructions as to the construction of the ark of the covenant. What specific wood was it to be made of, according to the King James Bible?

Answer: shittim wood

Exodus 25:10 says, "And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof."
6. In Exodus chapter 34, God renewed his covenant with His people. He instructed them to destroy the pagan altars and to drive out the inhabitants of the land. In verse 17, what other specific warning did God give the people?

Answer: Make no molten gods

Because the Israelites forsook the Lord so soon after they were delivered out of the hands of Pharaoh, and adapted the customs of the pagans and the country where they had lived for 400 years, it was mandated that no graven nor molten (metal) images be made.

As we will see later in God's word, leaving even a shred of the people of Canaan or their habits would cause the nation of Israel sorrow.
7. Because he murdered an Egyptian, Moses fled Egypt and spent the next forty years in what land?

Answer: Midian

The Bible recorded in Exodus 2:15, "Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well."
Reuel was another name for his father-in-law Jethro, Gershom was Moses' son, and Philistia was on the Mediterranean Sea, not the Sinai peninsula.
8. In Exodus 16, the Lord began to provide food for the Israelites which became their diet for the next forty years. God provided quail for meat, and manna for bread. What quantity of manna were the Israelites to collect the day before the sabbath so that they would not have to work and violate the sabbath?

Answer: Two Omers

Unlike other days on which the Israelites were only to gather enough for the present day, they were instructed to collect two omers per man so that they would not have to work on the sabbath. It is thought that an omer was the equivalent of slightly more than two litres in volume. Exodus 16:16 instructed them to collect one omer, and 16:22 twice the quantity on the sixth day, or the day preceding the sabbath day.
9. How long did it take the Israelites to arrive at Mount Sinai after they left Egypt?

Answer: 45 days

The people left on the 15th day of the first month of the year, using the new calendar (Exodus 12:1-3 and Numbers 33:3) and arrived at Sinai 45 days later on the 1st day of the third month.
10. In all the instructions given to Moses for the construction of the tabernacle, God was explicit in his instruction. A golden candlestick was to be prepared to stand in the sanctuary of the tabernacle. How many branches was the candlestick (or lampstand) to have?

Answer: Six, three on each side

Exodus 25:31-32 stated, "And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side."
