Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two Gospels tell of the genealogy of Christ. However, only one Gospel mentions Rahab and Ruth in its genealogy. Which Gospel is it: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: Matthew

The correct answer is Matthew with the genealogy of Christ appearing in the first 17 verses of the first chapter. According to Matthew 1:5, Rahab was married to Salmon and they were the parents of Boaz. As reported in the Hebrew Bible, or the Old Testament of the English Bible, the same verse in Matthew of Boaz and Ruth being the parents of Obed.

A second account of the genealogy of Christ appears in the third chapter of Luke, but the names Rahab and Ruth are not included in the text.
2. One of the Gospels quotes Jesus as telling a parable called The Prodigal Son in which a father welcomes home his long lost son after he squandered all his money on wild living. In what Gospel do you find the well-known parable? Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: Luke

The parable of the Prodigal Son is found in Luke 15:11-32. Scripture says the young man moved to a distant land and spent all his money on wild living. With no money to live on, the Lost Son hired himself out to a man who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. Ending up in such circumstances would be almost unthinkable for a Jew as pigs were seen as unclean and strictly forbidden from the diet. Feeding pigs would be seen as the lowest of the low among jobs, perhaps on the same scale today as that of a toilet bowl cleaner.

The parable ends with the Lost Son returning home of his father who welcomed him with open arms.
3. One of the Gospels tell of Jesus turning water into wine. According to the account, it was the first miracle performed by Jesus. In what Gospel do you find details about the miracle? Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: John

Details about the miracle are found in John 2:1-12. Verses 1-3 tell of Jesus being at a wedding banquet in Cana when He was informed by His mother the hosts had run out of wine. Verses 7 and 8 tell of Jesus instructing people to fill a number of jars with water and then to draw some out and give a sample to the master of the banquet. After tasting the liquid, the master expresses surprise at how fine the wine is. In Verse 10, the master compliments the bridegroom, stating "every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!"

According to the Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible, Cana was west of the Sea of Galilee and about ten miles north of Nazareth.
4. One of the Gospels tells of Jesus instructing Peter to go fishing and look inside the mouth of a fish in which he would find a coin to pay the temple tax. In what Gospel do you find the miracle? Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: Matthew

Matthew is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Jesus instructed Peter to go fishing and after he caught his first fish to look in its mouth. Peter was told he would find a coin in the fish's mouth to pay the obligatory temple tax.

Matthew 17:24-27 explains things this way: "When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, 'Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?' He said, 'Yes.' And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, 'What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?' Peter said to Him, 'From strangers.' Jesus said to him, 'Then the sons are free. Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.'"

The account of the temple tax found in the fish's mouth is found in only the Gospel of Matthew.
5. The healing of a blind man in stages at Bethsaida is told in only one Gospel. According to Scripture, a blind man was brought to Jesus to be healed and He responded by spitting on the man's eyes and putting His hands on him. The blind man is then quoted as telling Jesus he could partially see with "men like trees, walking." After Jesus put His hands on the man's eyes the second time, he was able to see "everyone clearly." In what Gospel do you find an account of this miracle. Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: Mark

The miracle can be found in only Mark with details appearing in Verses 22-25 of the eighth chapter. Scripture gives this account: "Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. And he looked up and said, 'I see men like trees, walking.' Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. Then He sent him away to his house, saying, 'Neither go into the town, nor tell anyone in the town.'"

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible give this explanation of the miracle: "Jesus' healing of the blind man in stages paralleled the disciples' imperfect perception of Jesus. Like the man, they were no longer blind, but they could not see clearly either. Only the Holy Spirit could clear their vision."
6. In only one Gospel do we read about Jesus meeting Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector of Jericho. In what Gospel do we read about the meeting? Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: Luke

Only in the Gospel of Luke do we read about Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector of Jericho, meeting Jesus. Details appear in Luke 19:1-10 with Verse 2 stating Zaccaeus was wealthy.

Tax collectors of the day were largely believed to be guilty of overcharging residents and keeping a portion of the taxes for themselves, before turning the rest of the money over to the Romans. Since he was the chief tax collector of Jericho, it is easy to surmise how Zacchaeus accumulated his wealth.

Verse 7 tells of the people muttering about Jesus associating with a sinner like Zacchaeus, and he responded in Verse 8 by stating, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold."

Zacchaeus, of course, was short in stature and Scripture tells of him climbing a sycamore tree to get a better view of Jesus as He passed through town.

According to Wikipedia, Jericho is believed to be one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.
7. Only one Gospel gives details about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead at Bethany. In what Gospel do you find the account of the miracle? Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: John

According to Scripture, Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, was raised from the dead at Bethany. The report of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is perhaps Christ's most famous miracle, but the account can be found in only the Gospel of John.

Scripture states the man had been dead for four days and in John 11:39, Martha was not keen about the stone being rolled away from Lazarus' tomb because of concern about the "stench" from the body. In other words, the funeral was over a long time ago and Lazarus was as dead as they come. According to Wikipedia, rigor mortis lasts for about 72 hours, or three days. In this case, the rigor mortis was over and now the body was starting to decay in the hot Mediterranean sun.
8. The healing of a deaf and mute man is found in only one Gospel with Scripture stating Jesus put His fingers in the man's ears and spat and touched his tongue. In what Gospel do you find details about the miracle? Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: Mark

Mark is the correct answer. Mark 7:31-35 in the NKJV, states: "Again, departing from the region of Tyre and Sidon, He came through the midst of the region of Decapolis to the Sea of Galilee. Then they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, and they begged Him to put His hand on him. And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers in his ears, and He spat and touched his tongue. Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, 'Ephphatha,' that is, 'Be opened.' Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, 'He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.'"

According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, the healing of the deaf and mute man is one of only two miracles that appear in only the Gospel of Mark. The other miracle involves a blind man who regained his sight, as per Mark 8.
9. All four of the Gospels tell of Christ's arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane with the ear of a servant being sliced by a sword wielded by one of the disciples. However, only one Gospel tells of the servant's ear being restored by Jesus before He was led away to be put on trial. What's the only Gospel in which the miraculous restoration of the servant's ear is found? Is it Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: Luke

Luke is the correct answer. Luke 22:49-51 gives this account of the miraculous restoration of the servant's ear: "When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, 'Lord, shall we strike with the sword?' And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus answered and said, 'Permit even this.' And He touched his ear and healed him."

According to John 18:10, the servant's name was Malchus. The following verse states the sword was wielded by Peter.
10. One of the Gospels tells of Jesus making a post-resurrection appearance and enabling the disciples to miraculously catch a large number of fish after a futile night of fishing. Which Gospel is it: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John?

Answer: John

John 21:1-14 tells of Jesus appearing to seven of His disciples after they had fished all night with nothing to show for their efforts. Things changed dramatically, however, after Jesus entered the scene.

Scripture states after Jesus was told by the disciples that they had not caught any fish, He told them to cast the net on the right side of the boat "and you will find some."

John 21:6, in the NKJV, tells what happened next: "So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish."

According to John 21:2, Peter was fishing with Thomas, Nathanael, James and John and two unnamed disciples.

John 21:14 states this was the third time Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after His resurrection.
