Saint Lucy, sometimes called Saint Lucia, was a Christian who refused to enter into an arranged marriage with a pagan man. Her rejected suitor then denounced her as a Christian, and she was put to death on the orders of Diocletian, in 304AD.
The symbolism of her depicted with the eyeballs on a dish stems from the legend that during her martyrdom, her eyes were put out, but then restored to her by God.
The name Lucy is derived from the Latin word lux for light.
