Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why don't I see any AC batteries around here?

Answer: Batteries are only DC.

If you picked "They're hiding" don't get too upset. I have frequently *wanted* to answer in that fashion!
2. Where are the tapes that convert 8mm tapes to VHS?

Answer: They don't exist.

8mm and VHS are two different speeds. Period. People frequently say things like, "Wal Mart sells them, but they're out." I say, "Fine. When they're back in, buy one and show it to me." I've been in this business for 9 years, and no one has ever taken me up on that challenge.
3. You don't have the exact fuse I need. How do I find a safe substitute?

Answer: You can go higher with volts and lower with amps.

If you go higher with amps, you defeat the purpose of having a fuse in the first place!
4. All cordless telephone batteries are the same.

Answer: False

I kid you not. People come in all the time and ask for "a cordless telephone battery." There are hundreds from which to choose. Please be nice to the poor electronics retail employees and bring your old battery with you.
5. Where are your gas-powered remote-controlled cars?

Answer: At the local hobby store.

Again, you may be tempted to get smart with this questioner. This is an *electronics* store. Gas-powered *anythings* are not considered electronic. Local hobby stores should carry them, however.
6. Why do I need an RF modulator to hook my DVD player to my old TV? Why can't I just change the plugs from RCA to F?

Answer: Because RCA connectors and F connectors carry two different kinds of signal.

F connectors carry an RF signal. RCA connectors carry a line-level signal. Those two signals aren't interchangeable. You need an RF modulator to change line-level signal into RF signal so your TV can understand it.
7. When I go to make a call on my cell phone, I don't get a dial tone. Why not?

Answer: Because there isn't one.

Seriously. There is no dial tone on a wireless phone. It's not hooked into a phone jack. Now is the time to give your customer a refund on his/her phone so you don't have to deal with 100 more stupid questions in the near future.
8. A surge supressor will save your electronic equipment from a direct lightning hit.

Answer: False

Nothing will save your electronic equipment from a *direct* lightning hit. Fortunately, those are rare. Surge supressors *can* save your equipment from surges due to nearby lightning, squirrels frying themselves on your power lines, etc.
9. How does a speaker wire's gauge affect speaker sound?

Answer: Lower gauges are thicker and will carry the signal better.

When in doubt, choose a lower gauge of speaker wire for better sound.
10. I need a power adapter for my CD player so I can use it in my car. What information do you need to find the right one?

Answer: Voltage, Amperage, Polarity, and Plug Size

Electronic retail employees are not psychic. Please bring your CD player with you, and they'll find the right adapter for you with a smile.

I hope you learned a little from this quiz! If you know all of this information, you can field about 90% of the questions asked of the associates in my store!
