Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which distance unit does NOT belong to the American measurement system?

Answer: millimeter

A furlong is one eighth of a mile in the American customary units, which are equal to the American System or what used to be called the English system. The British system is similar, but not equivalent to the British Imperial system of units. Unlike the metric or SI systems, there is no standard unit.
2. What is an English unit for volume?

Answer: cubic feet

The avoirdupois ounce is a measure of mass. Volume measures capacity, which is a three-dimensional unit. Square feet is a measure of area and feet is a measure of length.
3. What is the relationship between a troy ounce and an avoirdupois ounce?

Answer: A troy ounce is slightly larger

The troy ounce is about 10% larger than the avoirdupois ounce. An interesting fact is that a troy pound is smaller than a avoirdupois pound because a troy pound contains only 12 troy ounces, while an avoirdupois pound is 16 ounces. As far as I know, only precious metals are measured in troy ounces.
4. You are cooking with a recipe that called for 1/4 pound of butter. How many teaspoons of butter do you add?

Answer: 24

There are 16 ounces in a pound and there are also 32 tablespoons (Tbsp) in a pound. Since 2 Tbsp equals 1 ounce, 1/4 of a pound is 8 Tbsp. There are 3 teaspoons per tablespoon, so you need to add 24 teaspoons. Everyone who bakes knows that each stick of butter is 1/4 pound and that there are marks along the side of the stick that equal 1 mark per tablespoon (8 Tbsp = 1/4 pound).
5. In what American units do we buy paint?

Answer: gallons

There are four quarts per gallon and two pints per quart. Since the are 16 fluid ounces in a pint, a gallon is 128 fluid ounces. Although the paint can will state how many square feet the paint will cover, it is sold by the gallon, quart, or pint.
6. What type of material is not sold by the cubic yard?

Answer: carpeting

Carpeting is sold in square yards, an area measure. The other items are sold by the cubic yard, a volume or capacity unit.
7. A jigger is a unit of volume. What is the ratio of the volume of a jigger to a fluid ounce?

Answer: 3:2

I always thought that a jigger and a shot were synonomous and that a shot was also an ounce. But it turns out that they are both 1.5 ounces.
8. "I love you a bushel and a peck." How much do I love you?

Answer: five pecks

Bushels and pecks are dry measures used for agricultural products. One bushel equals four pecks, so I love you five pecks. The song "I Love You a Bushel and a Peck" was sung by Miss Adelaide, a character in "Guys and Dolls."
9. Modern pharmacies use the metric system, but until recently they used a unit that is approximately 65 milligrams. What is this unit that sounds as if it were invented by a wheat farmer?

Answer: grain

A grain is 1/7000 pound. Some prescriptions are still filled in grains. I know my dog was taking phenobarbitol and the bottle listed each tablet as one grain.
10. Temperature is measured in degrees. In the United States, if the weatherman says the daily high will be 90 degrees, what temperature measuring system is he using?

Answer: Fahrenheit

Celsius units are sometimes called centigrade, a more descriptive term, since there are one hundred degrees or grades between the boiling and freezing temperatures of water. Kelvin is a metric measure of temperature that is based upon absolute zero. Zero K = Absolute zero. An interesting fact about the Kelvin scale is that there is no degree symbol used as a superscript for the K. Rankine is an absolute value scale using Fahrenheit degrees instead of centigrade degrees.
