DC electronics 101 Trivia Quiz

If you know your basic electronics, this should be a breeze. If you know your math you should be OK. If not, here's your first lesson in electronics. Just remember what Ohm said, "V=I*R" and "P=I*V". Have fun!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's take a 9 volt battery and a 3000 ohm resistor. If we place the two leads of the resistor to the two leads of the battery, how much current will flow?

Answer: 3 mA

That's right. Ohm's law states that V=I*R. That is, voltage is the force, the force of electron current. But the force can only "push" so much current (I) through so much resistance (R). Since we know V (voltage) equals 9 volts, and R (resistance) equals 3000 ohms, the equation can be changed to I=V/R i.e. 9/3000=3mA.
2. If you were to place a 3000 ohm resistor across a 9 volt battery, what is the power dissipated from this resistor?

Answer: 27 mW

That's right P=I*V. As current travels through a resistance, voltage is "dropped" across it. The voltage times the current gives us the power dissipated from the resistance. Of course we could have solved this without calculating for current. We could have put both equations (V=I*R & P=I*V) together, this way: P=(V/R)*V which is P=V^2/R.
3. If you have two 3000 ohm resistors in series, what is our total resistance?

Answer: 6 kOhms

When calculating Rt or total resistance with resistors in series, you add the resistance: R1 + R2 + R3...Rx = Rtotal
4. If you have two 3000 ohm resistors in series on a 9 volt battery, what is the wattage (power) dissipated from each resistor?

Answer: 6.75 mW

By adding another resistor in series we've increased the total resistance. This reduces the total current, thus reducing the total power. And remember I asked for the power dissipated from ONE resistor.
5. If you have two 3000 ohm resistors in parallel, what is the total resistance?

Answer: 1.5 kOhms

By adding a second path of current travel, we've added more current which in turn reduces total resistance. Yet the same equation works for both resistors, "V=I*R". But now we have two paths of current travel. When calculating parallel resistance you use the following equation: 1/((1/R1)+(1/R2)+...(1/Rx))= Rtotal
6. If you were to apply two 3000 ohm resistors in parallel across a 9 volt battery, what is the total power dissipated from the battery?

Answer: 54 mW

We still use the equation P=V^2/R but since we have less resistance as we add more resistors in parallel, we add more power usage of the power source (in this case the battery).
7. If a 3000 ohm resistor and a 1500 ohm resistor and a 10 ohm resistor are placed in parallel, what happens to the total resistance if a 100,000 ohm resistor is added in parallel?

Answer: very little change

Technically the total resistance will drop. But because the smallest resistance is 10 ohms, by adding a 100,000 resistor in parallel, the change is very minute.
8. What rarely-used electronics equation works for solving TWO and only TWO resistors in parallel?

Answer: (R1*R2)/(R1+R2)

Use the math, it works! This equation is rarely used because usually you have more than two resistors in parallel.
9. If you have two 3000 ohm resistors in parallel with each other, and a third 3000 ohm resistor in series with the first two, what is the total resistance?

Answer: 4.5 kOhms

Calculate the parallel, then add the serial.
10. If you were to remove the 12 volt battery from your car, and connect a 4.7 k ohm resistor in series with two other resistors in parallel, one of which has a resistance of 3.3 k ohms and the other a resistance of 10 k ohms, what is the current flowing from the battery?

Answer: 1.7 mA

Calculate the parallel resistance, add the series resistance and use that in the equation V=I*R.
