Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dissociative Identity Disorder is characterized in the DSM IV by the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states that recurrently take control of behavior. In spite of its inclusion in the 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders' (Edition IV) some psychiatrists believe there is no such illness as DID.

Answer: True

Unfortunately, there is still some denial within the mental health community.
2. Dissociative Identity Disorder is essentially the same as Multiple Personality Disorder.

Answer: true

The two terms are interchangeable but most professionals who accept the phenomenon use the DID term.
3. Patients with DID have more than one person living in their bodies.

Answer: False

Only one person can live in a body. The alter personalities are actually pieces of the whole personality that have split off due to abuse or trauma.
4. DID manifests itself the same way in every person affected.

Answer: False

DID is a very individual disorder. No two people have exactly the same system of alters, though of course there are similarities.
5. Some alter personalities are so completely separate that they establish independent lives.

Answer: True

While it is very rare, it does happen in severe cases.
6. All persons with DID are aware that they have it.

Answer: False

It is not uncommon for people with DID to be completely unaware of their problem. Most do express a feeling that they are different from others but not sure how.
7. Many people with DID spend around seven years in the mental health system before they are correctly diagnosed.

Answer: True

Sad but true. However, for me personally it was 14 years. There was much more resistance to the idea of DID back then.
8. The goal for healing for every person diagnozed with DID is always integration.

Answer: False

Integration is the fusing of all the alters into one whole personality. While this may seem the solution for all, there are many cases where the alter system works so well that integration is not necessary for the person to lead a productive and happy life.
9. In DID there is always a 'good' personality and an 'evil' personality.

Answer: False

This is a misconception created by Hollywood fiction.
10. DID usually occurs when a person is abused beyond their ability to cope.

Answer: True

Sadly, our society is still producing abusers by the score. Different people cope with abuse in different ways. Alters are created by the need to survive.
