Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is recommended that women reduce their caffeine intake during pregnancy. What do most practitioners agree is a safe amount of caffeine?

Answer: No more than 200 mg per day

Although debates about the effect of caffeine on pregnancy persist, most practitioners advise women to keep their caffeine down to 200 milligrams a day. Keep in mind that tea also has caffeine, with black teas usually containing the highest amount. Chocolate is another caffeine source-though the amounts are smaller than in most teas and soft drinks.

A 2003 Danish study linked an increased rate of stillbirth with consumption of four to seven cups of coffee a day. Also bear in mind that fresh ground and darker roast coffees have more caffeine, so check your labels carefully.
2. You've had a little insomnia during your pregnancy. A good way to relax before bed is to brew up a soothing cup of herbal tea containing Pennyroyal and American Mandrake.

Answer: False

Both of these herbs are abortifacients, which mean they have a chance of causing miscarriage. For a complete list of herbs to avoid during pregnancy, check websites or ask your doctor.
3. About how many extra calories do you need, per day, for your developing baby (in U.S. calorie units)?

Answer: 300

Just 300! So, you are not exactly eating for two. How many total calories you need per day will depend on your height and body build.
4. Which of the following fish is likely to be the safest to eat during pregnancy?

Answer: Trout

Most practitioners recommend that you limit your intake of fish to less than 12 ounces a week, because many fish contain mercury, which could cause harm to your developing fetus. Trout has a much lower mercury level than the other three fish mentioned, which, along with shark, have some of the highest mercury levels. Many websites give details of mercury levels in fish to help you decide which to avoid.
5. Of the following, which is the least safe cheese to eat during pregnancy?

Answer: Unpasteurized

Unpasteurized soft and semi-soft cheeses can contain listeria, bacteria that can cause an illness called listeriosis, which some researches have linked to miscarriage and still birth. In the United States, cheeses available in the grocery store will be made from pasteurized milk, however.
6. You want to take one final vacation before the baby is born and your time is consumed. You will need to fly to your destination. When is it safest and most comfortable for you to travel?

Answer: Second trimester

In an uncomplicated pregnancy, flying is not a risk. Some airlines, however, forbid travel in the third trimester of pregnancy, because they are concerned about the possibility of a woman going into labor on the plane! The first trimester is not the most ideal time to travel, either, because that is when you will most likely be experiencing the symptoms of pregnancy such as morning sickness.

The second trimester, when many of the symptoms of pregnancy have temporarily vanished, is your safest time to travel. If you do fly, make sure you drink adequate water and stretch your legs often.
7. Which of these should be avoided during pregnancy?

Answer: Raw eggs

Raw eggs, or products containing raw eggs, should be avoided. Cooked eggs are a good source of nutrition, so don't avoid them completely.
8. Which of the following is not a safe exercise to engage in during pregnancy?

Answer: Skating

You should avoid sports that might cause you to fall, such as skating, skiing, and horseback riding. You should also avoid contact sports, such as sparring, during pregnancy. Exercise can help with constipation, insomnia, fatigue, and various other pregnancy symptoms. Women with certain complications in pregnancy may be advised by their practitioners not to exercise.
9. After the first trimester, it is safest to avoid exercises that involve lying on your back.

Answer: True

This position makes it harder for blood to flow to your uterus.
10. If you're making a salad, Iceberg lettuce is your best choice to gain nutrition for your growing baby.

Answer: False

Iceberg lettuce contains very few vitamins and nutrients. Try a leafy green like Romaine or spinach instead.
11. Plant-based hair dyes are safe to use during pregnancy.

Answer: True

According to the American Pregnancy Association, "only small amounts of hair dye may be absorbed by the skin, leaving little that would be able to reach the fetus. As such, this small amount is not considered harmful to the fetus." If you are concerned about the use of hair dye during pregnancy, however, use a plant-based dye or skip the hair dying.
12. You need six to eight glasses of fluid per day. Which of the following is an acceptable source of some of this liquid?

Answer: All of these

Any source of liquid can count toward your eight glasses, though of course you will want to drink tea in moderation. Hydration is important during pregnancy because dehydration can cause premature labor.
13. Which of the following is unnecessary to avoid during pregnancy?

Answer: Warm Baths

Saunas and hot tubs elevate your body temperature and could cause harm to the fetus. Bubble baths could cause irritation leading to urinary tract infections.
14. Sex is safe during uncomplicated pregnancies.

Answer: True

If you are at a high risk for miscarriage, however, your practitioner may tell you to refrain from sex.
15. Folic acid, or folate, may prevent neural tube defects. Which of the following is highest in folate?

Answer: Spinach

Spinach has 80 mgs of folate per serving, while the next highest on the list, whole grain bread, has just 40.
