Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is not a function of a Manufacturing Execution System?

Answer: Send an invoice for the product.

Invoicing is done by the Administration.
2. MES translates an order (eg 1000 kgs of chocolate) into instructions for production machines. Which is not part of these instructions?

Answer: Programming Language

We're only talking about data here, not the technical realisation.
The Bill Of Material is the list of ingredients, the Equipment Specs define the tools to use, and the Personnel Specs define the required skills.
3. What is the set of production instructions called?

Answer: Recipe

There are different types of recipes, but that's too detailed for now.
4. One of the functions of a MES system is keeping inventory. Which job is done by the MES system?

Answer: Track the exact location of the goods in the plant.

Purchasing and Value Calculation are done by the administration. Once the product is out of the plant, MES is no longer interested.
5. Some MES applications also perform planning. Which time range is typically covered by MES?

Answer: Hour / Day / Week

Activities on second and minute scale are handled by machines, MES does not require this detail. Monthly and yearly planning is done by a sales forecast system or the administration software.
6. In order to produce something, the required resources need to be available and need to be planned. Which is not a type of resource?

Answer: Time

Materials are the goods you consume, Equipment is the machines and tools, and personnel are the required people to operate the machines. And of course you need time to make something, but time is a factor in the availability of each resource. You cannot buy more time, as you can buy more materials, equipment, or salaries.
7. Manufacturing Execution Systems are an emerging business in the food industry because American and European governments require their use.

Answer: True

The American and European food laws say that all materials have to be trackable throughout the food chain. e.g. from the grain to the bread on your table. Or, if you find some glass in your baby food, the company must be able to withdraw all products that have the same risk of having glass in them.
8. A Manufacturing Execution System interfaces with many other software products. Which software has nothing to with MES?

Answer: CRM - Customer Relationship Management

CRM is used by the sales department. MES engineers don't sell, they produce! SCADA is used by the operator to control the machinery. ERP is the typical administration software, and the WMS manages the inventory, and can be part of MES.
9. Software systems have users. Who is a typical user for a Manufacturing Execution System?

Answer: Production Supervisor

The machine operator usually has some operator panel(s) that might include MES functionality.
10. A difficult one! Of course some organisation is creating standards for Manufacturing Execution Systems. Which standard is related to MES?

Answer: ISA S95

The ISA S95 Standard defines the interface between MES and the administration software. ASCII is the character set used by computers. IEEE 802.3 is the electrical standard for wired ethernet and ISO 9000 is a quality standard.
