Question 1 of 10
1. What is the area of an equilateral triangle with a side length of 4? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. I need 2 pairs of same colored socks for a party, one for me and the other one for my brother. There are 16 red socks, 12 blue socks, and 9 yellow socks in my drawer. Picking randomly and blindly, what is the minimum number of socks I need to draw to make sure that I have 2 pairs of same colored socks? (The first pair can be of different color than the second pair) Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. If I flip a coin 3 times, what is the chance that I will flip at least one head? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. In a classroom of 100 students, 20 studied French, 28 studied Spanish, and 32 studied German. 12 students studied both French and Spanish, 10 students studied both French and German, and 8 students studied both Spanish and German. 5 students studied all three. How many students did not study any of these languages? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. If today is a Monday, what day will it be 1000 days from now? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. A solution has 300 milliliters of orange juice and 700 milliliters of apple juice. How many millilitres of orange juice should I add so that the mixture becomes half orange juice and half apple juice? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. I am in the supermarket and I want to buy three liters of water. A one liter bottle costs me 50 cents, a 750 milliliter bottle costs me 40 cents, and a 500 milliliter bottle costs me 30 cents. However, there is a promotion that if I buy 2 500 milliliter bottles, the price for the 2 would be 49 cents instead. What is the least expensive way to buy the three liters of water? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Player jbchong1258 can score 5500 FunTrivia points on the days that he is free, and 3500 FunTrivia points on the days that he is not. He is free on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. He has classes on the rest of the days of the week so he is not free. How many points can he score in a week? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Justin rolls a die and picks a card from a deck. What is the probability that he both rolls an even number and picks a Jack? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. In the Boxing Fight of the Century, there are twelve rounds. During the first round, Floyd Mayweather ran 500 meters around the boxing ring. For every successive round, he runs 10 meters less. How long is the distance that Floyd Mayweather has ran throughout the entire fight? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the area of an equilateral triangle with a side length of 4?

Answer: 4*sqrt(3)

The formula for the area of an equilateral triangle is (s^2*sqrt(3))/4. Another way to solve the area is to bisect the triangle and solve for the area using base times height divided by 2.
(The first pair can be of different color than the second pair)

Answer: 6

We solve this question using the pigeonhole principle. The worst case scenario is that I pick three of one color (1 pair) and one of each other color. The next sock I pick will give me another pair of one of the colors. So 6 is the answer.
3. If I flip a coin 3 times, what is the chance that I will flip at least one head?

Answer: 7/8

The probability of getting three tails is (1/2)^3=1/8. This is the only way that I cannot get at least one head. So the answer is 1-1/8=7/8.
4. In a classroom of 100 students, 20 studied French, 28 studied Spanish, and 32 studied German. 12 students studied both French and Spanish, 10 students studied both French and German, and 8 students studied both Spanish and German. 5 students studied all three. How many students did not study any of these languages?

Answer: 45

The answer can be found using a Venn diagram. The solution is 100-(20+28+32)+(12+10+8)- 5=45 students.
5. If today is a Monday, what day will it be 1000 days from now?

Answer: Sunday

The problem is solved by dividing 1000 by 7. The remainder we get is 6 and 6 days after Monday is Sunday.
6. A solution has 300 milliliters of orange juice and 700 milliliters of apple juice. How many millilitres of orange juice should I add so that the mixture becomes half orange juice and half apple juice?

Answer: 400

The answer is simply the difference of 700-300, which is 400. If the question is more complex, fractions and algebra can used to solve the answer.

Answer: 6 500 milliliter bottles

The minimal cost for 3 liters of water would be $1.47, since the promotion for 2 500 milliliter bottles is 49 cents. 2 500 milliliter bottles would sum up to a liter of water total, so since I need three liters of water, the total cost would be $1.47.

Answer: 30500

The points I can score in a week can be calculated by simple arithmetic. Hahaha!
9. Justin rolls a die and picks a card from a deck. What is the probability that he both rolls an even number and picks a Jack?

Answer: 1/26

The probability of rolling an even number is 3/6 or 1/2. The probability of picking a Jack is 4/52 or 1/13. The probability that both of these independent events happen is 1/2 times 1/13 which is 1/26.
10. In the Boxing Fight of the Century, there are twelve rounds. During the first round, Floyd Mayweather ran 500 meters around the boxing ring. For every successive round, he runs 10 meters less. How long is the distance that Floyd Mayweather has ran throughout the entire fight?

Answer: 5.34 kilometers

Subtracting 10 meters per round, he runs 390 meters in the last round. The average he runs per round is (500+390)/2=445 meters. The total distance ran is 445 meters times 12=5.34 kilometers.
