The object is believed to have been a comet or meteor that never impacted the ground. It is known as the Tunguska event.

In fact, the Sikhote-Alin iron meteorite was a witnessed event, on February 12, 1947. Mr. Medvedev was painting the Sikhote-Alin mountains when he saw the blazing streak of light at 10:38 AM, he included it in his painting.

It didn't help stop rust, but shows a nice crosshatch pattern of kamacite and taenite crystals that are present in Octahedrite meteorites.
