Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which layer of the OSI model do bridges predominantly operate in?

Answer: Data Link

Physical {layer;} hubs, repeaters, cabling. Data-Link {layer;} bridges, network cards. Network {layer;} routers. Gateways operate can operate at any layer depending on their purpose.
2. Which layer of the OSI model do routers predominantly operate in?

Answer: Network

The easy way to remember these is to think about what type of data the device is really interested in. Physical layer deals with electical pulses, 1's and 0's, etc. Data-Link deals with MAC addresses. Network deals with IP addresses, IPX addresses, or some other high-level address.
3. Which layer of the OSI model do gateways predominantly operate in?

Answer: Any layer

Gateways can run at any layer. Email gateways are usually higher layers, while protocol gateways operate at lower layers.
4. What is the correct value of a 10base2 terminator?

Answer: 50 ohms

An easy way to find a bad terminator is to break the segment and measure both ends. If one end is 50 ohms and the other is something else (usually open or 0 ohms) the problem is on that side of the network.
5. Which of the following IP addresses would not be found on the Internet?

Answer: 192.168.3.4

Addresses starting with 192.168.x.x are part of a range of special addresses reserved for private network use. Other private address ranges begin with 10.x.x.x and 172.x.x.x.
6. In addition to an IP address, what other piece of information is needed for a computer to join a network using TCPIP?

Answer: subnet mask

The subnet mask is used to divide the IP address into two {parts;} the node address (unique to a single computer on the network), and the network address (common to all computers on the network).
7. How many bytes are in a MAC address?

Answer: 6

Most MAC addresses are represented in hex, where the first three bytes designate a specific manufacturer and the last three are unique to the network card.
8. Given the IP address 38.176.229.5 and the subnet mask of 255.0.0.0, what is the address class?

Answer: Class A

Class A networks extend from 1-126, class B spans 128-191, and class C spans 192-223.
9. What special characteristic of Plenum cabling distinguishes it from non-Plenum cabling?

Answer: Non-toxic when burned

Plenum cabling is used where fire and building codes require non-toxic cable jacketing, usually in ceilings and air ducts.
10. Which Ethernet cable type can span the greatest distance between repeaters?

Answer: 10base5

10base5 can reach 500 meters, 10base2 can reach 185 meters, 10baseT can reach 100 meters. RG-62 is used for ArcNet cabling.
