Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following would NOT be a valid use for Zantac (ranitidine HCl)?

Answer: constipation

Ranitidine is a molecule that blocks type-2 histamine receptors in the stomach in order to reduce the amount of acid secreted. 75mg tablets are available over-the-counter for upset stomachs, while 150mg tablets are available on prescription in Canada for ulcers and severe reflux disease.
2. The ground-breaking drug sildenafil citrate is better known as Levitra.

Answer: False

Sildenafil citrate is better known as Viagra, the first drug approved for erectile dysfunction. The chemical name for Levitra is vardenafil HCl, which is used for the same purpose.
3. If I were taking Eltroxin, which organ would I be assisting?

Answer: thyroid gland

Eltroxin is one of the trade names for levothyroxin, a synthetic thyroid hormone used in people with hypothyroidism aka thyroid hormone deficiency.
4. Bayer is well known for marketing acetylsalicylic acid.

Answer: Yes

Another way of wording this statement would be "Bayer is well known for marketing aspirin". Aspirin can be used to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever, as well as to reduce the likelihood of heart attacks secondary to blood clots (under doctor supervision).
5. Advil and Motrin are over-the-counter products that both contain the same active ingredient as a pain reliever / anti-inflammatory / anti-pyretic. What is it?

Answer: ibuprofen

Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol. Diphenhydramine is the antihistamine found in Benadryl, among other products. Pseudoephedrine is the decongestant found in Sudafed preparations and many other cold medicines. Ibuprofen is the only drug listed here that has all three of these indications.
6. Let us assume I am being treated with opioids. Please select the one FALSE statement:

Answer: There is an accepted maximal opioid dose that should not be exceeded

Opioids are pain medications such as morphine, codeine, and hydromorphone. These types of medications do induce constipation, especially in high doses and chronic therapy. Tolerance is common, and so doses may need to be increased periodically. However, the maximal dose is the dose that treats the pain with tolerable side effects. There is no set limit.
7. Imitrex (sumatriptan) is used to help relieve what common condition?

Answer: migraines

Medications like sumatriptan are potent vasoconstrictors that target serotonin receptors in the cerebral arteries, relieving the swelling that is probably the cause for the migraine headache. The precise mechanism of migraines is currently unknown.
8. If I were using Fosamax (alendronate) what am I being treated for?

Answer: osteoporosis

Alendronate and other bisphosphonate medications act within the bone to help to slow down the rate of bone deterioration. Women are very susceptible to this later in life as a complication of menopause.
9. Allopurinol is used in the long term treatment and prevention of what condition?

Answer: Gout

Gout occurs when uric acid crystals form in the joint fluid, especially in the big toe. Allopurinol reduces the formation of uric acid (naturally made by the body) by inhibiting the xanthine oxidase enzyme.
10. Rofecoxib, a drug used in osteoarthritis, was taken off the market in a highly publicized manner in September 2004. Which of the following was the brand name for rofecoxib?

Answer: Vioxx

Celebrex is celecoxib and Bextra is valdecoxib. Vioxx, Bextra, and Celebrex are COX-2 inhibitors used to treat osteoarthritis with reduced risk of stomach side effects. It was found that Vioxx was associated with an increased risk of blood clots. Arthrotec is a combination of diclofenac (a non-specific COX inhibitor) and the cytoprotectant misoprostol. EDIT - Bextra (valdecoxib) was also removed from market in April 2005.
