Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the scientific name of the earliest or most primitive bird?

Answer: Archaeopteryx

This creature was really more dinosaur than bird with teeth, claws on the wing and a long tail. However, it has many other traits that have led scientists to classify it as the first bird. This creature lived in the Middle Jurassic Period.
2. Which of these is the earliest bat?

Answer: Icaronycterus

Despite evolving over 50 million years ago, this creature had many modern bat-like traits including the ability to echolocate. However, its tail and teeth were more like that of a shrew than a bat.
3. Which of these is an extinct species of duck?

Answer: Chenonetta

Also known as the Finsch's Duck, Chenonetta is believed to have only gone extinct as late as 1870.
4. Which of these was not a pterosaur?

Answer: Sharovipteryx

This weird creature was an extinct flying lizard with flaps of skin across elongated back feet. When stretched, it opened into a single membrane that helped the lizard glide.
5. Which of these creatures is an insect?

Answer: Meganeura

Meganeura was a giant dragonfly that lived during the Carboniferous Period. With the wingspan of a seagull, it could probably reach speeds equal to that of a hawk.
6. What was a special feature of Nyctosaurus?

Answer: It had a very long crest

Amazingly, the size of Nyctosaurus's crest was comparable to the size of its wing, around 3 times the length of the skull. Some scientists think that the crest might have supported a sail of skin for display or for maneuverability.
7. Which of these is the biggest pterosaur?

Answer: Hatzegopteryx

Recently, a newly discovered pterosaur, Hatzegopteryx, toppled Quetzacoatlus for the throne of the biggest flying animal that has ever lived. With a slightly larger skull and a maximum estimate of 2m longer than Quetzacoatlus, it was really a true dragon, at least in size.
8. Which of these creatures was an insect?

Answer: Pseudosiobla

Pseudosiobla was an extinct species of sawfly. Megarachne is a type of eurypterid (a sea scorpion). The other two names were made up.
9. Which of these was the largest flying bird?

Answer: Argentavis

With of a wingspan of 7.5m, this giant vulture rivaled even the largest of the pterosaurs. Its huge size probably helped the vulture intimidate even the mighty saber-tooth cats and possibly drive them from a kill.
10. Which of these bats could not echolocate?

Answer: Onychonycteris

Occuring only at a slightly later time period than Icaronycterus, this bat actually seems to display more primitive traits than its earlier counterparts.
