Question 1 of 10
1. You have been trapped in a room where most of the furniture is wooden. You are at present inaccessible, but also trapped. Suddenly, water starts to get pumped into the room from under the door. You jump onto a wooden stool to avoid electrocution. Looking closely, you realise that there is a salt mixed with the water, and it strikes you that the water is actually a saturated solution. You know that your current target, Dr.Po, is a chemical weapons expert and an expert in electrochemistry. You also know that Po is trying to kill you, and deduce that an electric current will soon be passed through the water as well through several spark-plug like devices on the wall. Based on this information, deduce which of the following salts he might be using. (The liquid is water) Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. After surviving the blazing room incident, you are assigned on a new low-end job for your failure while someone replaces you on the Dr.Po case. You are to dress up as a balloon-selling clown and stand on the sidewalk three floors below a window where your two colleagues are talking with one of Po's top men. When they give you a signal, you will release a few hydrogen-filled balloons which will rise up and automatically detonate once they reach the 3rd floor window owing to a special device.

You get bored, and stare at the balloons. You notice that the hydrogen filled ones have a rather thin membrane. This bothers you for some reason, but you can't quite place it.

Suddenly, upstairs, a fight breaks out as Po's man has realised who your colleagues are. You prepare to release your balloons regardless of whether your men are in or not. However, bullets rain down as someone from the third floor starts to shoot at you, and one bullet hits a hydrogen balloon.

Are you doomed to die in a hydrogen explosion after all?

Question 3 of 10
3. You are hospitalized following your latest misadventure. Your experience makes you realise that there must be a mole within your organization. Before you can inform your boss, Po makes an attempt on your life.

Even as you lie in your hospital bed, one of the walls in your private room is being whitewashed. You watch men apply liquid on the wall.

Lunch comes. On the menu are a glass of water, salt and pepper, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes and coffee. You take a hearty swig of water, and feel a burning sensation in your throat. You recognise the taste from a previous bitter experience, and realise you have just ingested sulphuric acid!

What is the likeliest course of action you can take to save yourself?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Two weeks after your attempted assassination, you are in top condition and thirsting for revenge. Your replacement having been killed, your boss puts you back on the Po case.

An informant tips you off on the location of one of Po's two chemical weapon production units. You pay it a visit and sneak in, to see that large amounts of sodium chloride are being melted and being put in a large metal box, with an electric current about to be passed through it. Before the box is sealed, you activate the electric current, electrically decomposing the molten sodium chloride. Chlorine gas is released in the factory. While pandemonium reigns, you bust open a large amount of oxy-hydrogen canisters.

Workers wearing gas masks hurriedly move to shutter the windows to prevent any sunlight from leaking in.

If you destroy the shutters as well, so that bright sunlight enters the room, will all the people in the factory die, leaving the plant machinery intact, OR will the factory equipment be wrecked as well?

Depending on the answer, is it a good idea to destroy the shutters or not?

Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. After your success at the chemical plant, your boss is happy, but Po's not. He doesn't appreciate his own chemicals being turned against him. He works harder to have you killed.

You receive incorrect information as to whereabouts of Po's second factory. On the way, you are intercepted by Po's men. You are alone and thus overpowered. Your means to call for help are destroyed and your are injected with large amounts of wasp poison (present in the sting of a wasp).

As you writhe from the pain, the men depart, leaving behind a tape. The tape tells you that the poison is wasp poison, which is very hard to obtain. Po reserves this painful way to die for those who trouble him most.

Fortunately, you are stronger than Po expects. You get into your car and drive, but don't get very far. You stumble out of the car and enter a supermarket. There are several things available in the store which you can use to save yourself.

Out of the following items, which would you use to act as an antidote against the wasp poison?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. You drive to the informant's house to give him a piece of your mind.

Upon reaching there, you find that the informant had been killed. You deduce that he was under the threat of death and was forced to make that call to you. You can also see that the informant died by inhaling a poisonous gas.

Strangely, you see that before his death, the informant had placed a vessel of water on the stove and was boiling it. You assume that the attackers left after poisoning the informant, who tried to take counteractive measures to save himself.

Based on this information, identify the gas which was most likely used to kill the informant.
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. You're quite fed up with Po and your constant close calls. You fervently wish to end this case for once and all.

Your agency gets the location of Po's other factory from reliable sources, backed up by satellites. Ignoring your pleas, your boss refuses to send you in and instead mobilises a battalion of military commandos. You are stuck in a surveillance room with your superiors, watching what happens from far away.

The commandos enter to find a completely empty factory. There is just a machine which is belching out smoke. You suddenly realise that it must be producing carbon monoxide, and tell the commandos so over the radio.

The commandos' gas masks had been tampered with. In desperation, they release chlorine gas to react with the carbon monoxide (the chlorine was normally used as a chemical weapon). Will doing this help at all?

Question 8 of 10
8. Your boss is getting a lot of heat because of his failure at getting his hands on Dr.Po and also for being unable to locate the mole in the organisation. Due to this, your agency has been forced to transfer the case to the CIA.

However, you are one spy who is not going to let things go. Whether you are assigned or not, you are going to ensure Dr.Po meets his downfall at your hands. Through a CIA liaison of yours, Felix Leishman, you get your hands on whatever information the Agency has on Po.

You find some codes and decide to take them back to a code-breaker you know to get them cracked. You're travelling to wherever the code-breaker is.

However, the CIA give pursuit, determined to catch you for hacking into their files. After a short while, in which you try every manoeuvre known to man to avoid capture, the CIA cars are blown up by some hidden men. They stop your car, blindfold you and take you somewhere. On the way, they identify themselves as Dr.Po's men.

You are finally face-to-face with the dreaded villain himself. The two of you are sitting at opposite ends of a dinner table. Po tells you how much inconvenience you have caused him. He tells you that you have been injected with a chemical that will kill you if you don't consume an acid soon. There are three glasses in front of you containing identical looking red liquid. One of them is mildly acidic, while the other two are mildly alkaline. Po tells you that if you complete this task, he will acknowledge your intellect and make you a proposition.

You're least interested in hearing the proposition, but do want to live. How can you identify which drink is acidic and which is alkaline? (You can't dunk them all down as Po will then kill you)
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. After correctly guessing which drink was acidic and consuming it, you take a walk with Po around his room. You long to attack and kill him with your bare hands, but you know very well that's not an option.

Po tells you that he is extremely old and needs someone to manage his business after he dies. He thinks you are perfect in every way for the job -- save for the fact that you are an agent. He tells you you can make a lot of cash doing what he does. You decide that playing along would give you an opportunity to finish Po. You agree and seal the deal with a handshake.

Immediately after the shake, a trapdoor opens below your feet and you land in a large metal tub half-filled with limestone. You realise that the 'deal' was just a ploy. The entire conversation was taped in order to frame you and save the skin of the mole in your agency!

But you have more immediate problems to deal with than being branded an enemy of the state. A machine is a about to pump large amounts of water into the tub of limestone to initiate a chemical reaction and kill you.

Now, why should you be worried?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. You manage to escape from the limestone tub before the trapdoor closes. Po has just shot two of his men for their incompetence and messing up the limestone trap.

Before Po can shoot you, your boss walks into the room, holding a silenced gun. Your momentary feeling of relief dissolves as you see a videotape in your boss's hand. Your boss was the mole in the organisation!

"Thanks for the tape, Po," your boss says. "It clears up the mole thing quite nicely. Now, our dealings are at an end. It's not working out with you, and I think I'd like a promotion." Saying so, your boss shoots Po, killing him instantly. He'll take the credit for capturing Po, and you'll be executed.

"Sorry, kid," your boss says to you, aiming his gun at your head. "You were a good agent. Wish I didn't have to waste you. But I gotta look after number one." Your boss fires.

The gun didn't have any more bullets.

Lightning fast, you snatch Po's gun and shoot your boss in the stomach. You run out, fight past the guards, and storm outside -- to be nabbed by the CIA. The CIA cuff you and shove you into a van.

You, however, are a man with a plan. You need to find out whether the cuffs are made of iron or not. Can you do this without using anything else but the cuffs?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
(The liquid is water)

Answer: Sodium chloride

If an electric current is passed through the sodium chloride solution, an electrolytic reaction takes place. Two gases, hydrogen and oxygen are liberated, an explosive mixture which would ignite and explode, killing you instantly. Sounds like a lot of work to kill a spy, I know, but that's just how supervillains are.

With the other three salts, oxygen would still be liberated, but hydrogen would not(think electrochemical series).

Answer: No

First reason why the answer is no, is because protagonists can't die.

The second reason is that the balloon membranes were thin, as you noticed. Hydrogen has the physical property of being able to diffuse easily out of membranes and porous pots. This is due to its low density.

Answer: Drink some of the liquid used for whitewashing.

The liquid used for whitewashing is calcium hydroxide, a base which would neutralise the sulphuric acid and minimize the damage. Whitewashing basically involves the application of calcium hydroxide on the walls, which combines with the acidic carbon dioxide of the air to form white calcium carbonate.

Alcohol is not alkaline; it is in fact very slightly acidic. Hence, alcohol is a no-no. Drinking water and diluting the acid won't help much since the acid will continue to react with your body tissues and kill you.

Salt and pepper to make you throw up is only for orally ingested poisons. The acid will react with tissues before reaching the stomach and kill you, so throwing up won't help much.
If you destroy the shutters as well, so that bright sunlight enters the room, will all the people in the factory die, leaving the plant machinery intact, OR will the factory equipment be wrecked as well? Depending on the answer, is it a good idea to destroy the shutters or not?

Answer: If the shutters are destroyed, and bright sunlight enters the plant, the plant equipment will be trashed, and so that is the best course of action as your objective is to destroy the plant

Hydrogen and chlorine, in bright sunlight, react EXPLOSIVELY to form hydrogen chloride. Destroying the shutters to let bright light enter will cause some serious damage to plant equipment, and your aim to destroy the plant and stop chemical production, and not to kill everyone in the plant.
Out of the following items, which would you use to act as an antidote against the wasp poison?

Answer: A carton of orange juice.

Wasp acid is alkaline. Orange juice contains citric acid, which can be used to neutralise the wasp poison. This is why acidic vinegar is used to ease the pain of a wasp sting.

The incorrect choices were all alkaline.

Answer: Chlorine

Chlorine poisoning can be counteracted by inhaling ammonia vapours from a bottle of ammonium hydroxide, alcohol vapours or, in this case, steam.

Because the informant was boiling water to form steam, chlorine was the most likely option.
The commandos' gas masks had been tampered with. In desperation, they release chlorine gas to react with the carbon monoxide (the chlorine was normally used as a chemical weapon). Will doing this help at all?

Answer: No

The carbon monoxide and chlorine will react, but they will form phosgene, which is also a poisonous gas.
8. Your boss is getting a lot of heat because of his failure at getting his hands on Dr.Po and also for being unable to locate the mole in the organisation. Due to this, your agency has been forced to transfer the case to the CIA. However, you are one spy who is not going to let things go. Po tells you that if you complete this task, he will acknowledge your intellect and make you a proposition. You're least interested in hearing the proposition, but do want to live. How can you identify which drink is acidic and which is alkaline? (You can't dunk them all down as Po will then kill you)

Answer: Apply on your fingertips

Alkalies have a characteristic soapy touch. Hence, if you apply the liquids on your fingertips, you can rule out which liquids not to drink.

If you sip each glass, well acids have a characteristic sour taste, but alkalies don't exactly taste sweet. Remember, sodium and potassium hydroxide are known as CAUSTIC soda and CAUSTIC potash respectively (caustic means bitter).

If you mix an acid and an alkali together, they'll form salt and water. No gas will be evolved, so mixing drinks ain't an option.

Also, I know a lot of my questions are based on neutralisation. It gets boring, I know, but it's hard to think of spy-chemistry situations. The next two have nothing to do with acids and bases though.
A machine is a about to pump large amounts of water into the tub of limestone to initiate a chemical reaction and kill you. Now, why should you be worried?

Answer: You aren't worried. Why should you be?

This was a trick question.

Limestone is calcium carbonate, or CaCO3. It won't react with water, it isn't even soluble in it. You can die by drowning, but not by a chemical reaction.

It is Quicklime (Calcium oxide or CaO) which reacts exothermically with water, not limestone.
The CIA cuff you and shove you into a van. You, however, are a man with a plan. You need to find out whether the cuffs are made of iron or not. Can you do this without using anything else but the cuffs?

Answer: Yes

Yup, you can. If you strike the cuffs together to produce a spark, you can see which metal the cuffs are based on the color of the spark. If the spark is reddish-brown, the cuffs are iron.

Well, needless to say, you escape from CIA clutches. Wait with baited breath for a new quiz in which you are - DUM DUM DUUUM - a rogue agent. For now, I'm exhausted and I'm signing off!
