Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these stars is the eye of Taurus?

Answer: Aldebaran

Aldebaran is a very bright, reddish-yellow star.
2. Out of these stars, which one is NOT in Orion's belt?

Answer: Betelgeuse

3. What is the closest number to the Sun's APPARENT magnitude?

Answer: -27

The apparent magnitude is how bright the star seems to us. The lower the number, the brighter it is. (Note: a star with an apparent magnitude of 437 is waaaaaaaaaay too dim to be seen.)
4. Which of these is in the constellation Gemini?

Answer: Castor

Castor and Pollux are the two brightest stars in Gemini.
5. This is called the 'dog star.'

Answer: Sirius

The 'dog star,' Sirius, is so bright that it can be seen in the daytime in late summer. This is where the term 'dog days of summer' comes from. Sirius is in the constellation Canis Major. Sirius has an absolute magnitude of 1.4 and an apparent magnitude of -1.46.
6. This 'open cluster' is called 'seven stars' or 'seven sisters.'

Answer: Pleiades

Pleiades is actually made up of about 20 stars, but only seven can be seen easily, or without a pair of binoculars.
7. Which of these can be found in Orion's sword?

Answer: Great Nebula

The Oort Cloud is beyond Pluto. Delenora does not exist.
8. Regulus is in what constellation?

Answer: Leo

Regulus is Leo the Lion's foot. It has an absolute magnitude of -0.3 and an apparent magnitude of 1.35.
9. Out of these choices, name the star with the brightest apparent magnitude.

Answer: Arcturus

The apparent magnitude is how bright the star seems to our eyes. Absolute magnitude is how bright the star would be to us if all the stars were 32.616 light years away. Sirius is the brightest star in apparent magnitude.
10. Which of these has the lower (brighter) absolute magnitude: Spica or Antares?

Answer: Antares

Spica is no dim star with an absolute magnitude of -3.2, but Antares takes the cake here at -5.2.
11. What constellation is Procyon in?

Answer: Canis Minor

Procyon has an apparent magnitude of .38 and an absolute magnitude of 2.6.
12. Which is brighter (in apparent magnitude): Vega or Deneb?

Answer: Vega

Vega's apparent magnitude is .03 and Deneb's is 1.25. (But in absolute magnitude, Deneb is much brighter.)
13. What constellation is the King?

Answer: Cepheus

Cetus is the Whale, and Bootes is the Herdsman. And Elvis is dead! :o)
14. In which constellation can Alpha Centauri be found?

Answer: Centaurus

Although it is the dimmest of the three-star system, Alpha Centauri C is often called Proxima Centauri because, at 4.3 lightyears, it is the closest star to the Solar System.
15. Which of these represents the Andromeda Galaxy?

Answer: M31
