Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a non-impact printer?

Answer: ink jet printer

A non-impact printer produces text and images without even touching the paper. An ink-jet printer is a non-impact printer because it just sprays ink onto paper to produce text and images.
2. An FTP program is application software that deals with what?

Answer: communications software

FTP, short for File Transfer Protocol, is a feature where a computer user uploads and downloads various files to and from websites. Here's where the communication part comes in. Communication is involved in uploading when a file goes on sites such as YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, etc. Communication-wise, downloading requires interaction between user and website to get web files (i.e. pictures, videos, and songs) onto a computer.
3. What is the first thing that happens when booting a computer?

Answer: the power supply sends a signal to the system unit

The power supply transfers electrical currents to the entire system unit, which contains electrical components. That activates the processor chip which then locates the ROM chip that contains the computer's startup instructions.
4. B2B, B2C, and C2C are all types of what?

Answer: E-Commerce

E-Commerce, short for electronic commerce, deals with conducting business transactions online. B2B (Business to Business) applies to one business exchanging with another, mainly done in between countries. B2C (Business to Customer) pertains to commerce to the general public, primarily done on E-Bay and Amazon. C2C is where one online user conducts business with another online user; that is frequently done on sites like PayPal.
5. What is the binary equivalent of 29?

Answer: 11101

Computers use the digits of the binary numeric system when it comes to computer programming. The binary numeric system is a combination of 0s and 1s that represents natural numbers. Numbers are translated into a binary code by using the pattern 1, 2, 4, 8, etc (the pattern reads the other way around). Now bit 0 and bit 1 determines which of these numbers add up to a certain number. Since bit 0 means that the circuit is off, then the number(s) that correspond to bit 0 is not used. Since bit 1 indicates that the circuit is on, and then the number(s) that correspond to bit 1 is used. Now the question is to find the binary equivalent to the number 9.

The necessary pattern to use is 16, 8, 4, 2, and 1 considering that the number is less than 32.

The binary equivalent to 29 is 11101 because 16, 8, 4, and 1 are used to add up to 29, and 2 isn't.
6. Which network operating system is Solaris a version of?

Answer: UNIX

Solaris is a version of Unix develpoed by Sun Microsystems. The things Solaris deals with are e-commerce, multithreading, and symmetric multiprocessing.
7. What computer virus replicates itself, shutting down the computer system in the process?

Answer: worm

A worm can also replicate itself to the point where it uses up the entire computer's storage capacity.
8. What technology connects a user to the internet through copper telephone lines?

Answer: DSL

DSL is short for Digital Subscriber Lines. It provides high speed Internet access by transmitting digital data from a DSL modem to the DSL line that's connected to it.
9. What network connects computers across a college building?

Answer: LAN

LAN is short for Local Area Network. It is a network that connects computers usually in a single building such as a home, agency, or school.
10. What is the correct order of relationships of data when it comes to databases?

Answer: characters, fields, records, files

Characters are various bits and bytes used to form texts. A series of related text marks make a field. More than one field of characters is a record. Records of field containing characters are known as files.
