Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these science-related words are shown in the plural form. Which is the odd one out? Note: as a good scientist I will insist on pedantry here--no 'common use' arguments will be entered into!

Answer: fungus

All four words have Latin origin. The plural of fungus is fungi (pronounced either like "fun guy", "fungee" or "funjee" depending on your accent). The singular forms of data, stimuli and algae are datum, stimulus and alga, respectively.

Data is increasingly used as if it were the singular form of the word so few people will laugh at you for using it this way. In fact, I've had a few people tell me I've made an error when I've written "data are..."

But what's the point of being a scientist if you're not prepared to suffer for truth, eh?
2. Three of these illnesses are caused by viruses. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: whooping cough

Whooping cough (scientific name pertussis) is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. The cough caused by pertussis infection is so severe that patients can suffer broken ribs. According to the WHO 195,000 deaths globally were caused by whooping cough in 2008.
3. Three of the following are common terms you'd find in a geometry text book. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Parable

If you discounted parable, you might be thinking of parabola - a type of curve.

When I was introduced to all these new words in school my maths teacher taught my class various tricks to help remember them. He said to remember 'hypotenuse' he would think 'the upstairs toilet is occupied'. The main thing this made me remember is that my maths teacher was a dork.
4. Three of the following are prime numbers. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: 117

A prime number has exactly two natural divisors: 1 and itself. By definition then, 1 is not a prime number as it only has a single divisor.

117 is NOT a prime number because its divisors are 1, 117, 3, 9, 13, and 39.
5. Three of the following elements are gases at normal room temperature and standard atmospheric pressure. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Mercury

Mercury is one of only two elements that are liquid at room temperature, 21 degrees Celsius, and the only metal. The chemical symbol for mercury is Hg. This isn't because scientists can't spell or like to torture high school chemistry students - it comes from the Latin name for the element, hydrargyrum. Translated into English this means "watery silver".
6. Three of these planets have one or more natural satellites (moons), while the other is all alone. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Venus

The solar system's two inner planets (Mercury and Venus) don't have moons, but the rest do.

The largest moon in the universe is Jupiter's satellite Ganymede which at 5300km in diameter is larger than the planet Mercury. It was named after a character in Greek mythology - the cupbearer of the gods. Moons have cool names.
7. The options below are all laws of physics, in general terms. Three of them are collectively referred to as Newton's laws of motion. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: The extension of a spring is proportional to the load applied to it

The odd one out is Hooke's law. It is an approximation that only applies to certain materials, called linear-elastic or Hookean materials.
8. Three of the following are groups of organic compounds. One is a word I made up. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: alkones

Alkanes, alkenes and alkynes are all hydrocarbons, meaning that they are composed entirely of hydrogen and carbon.

The simplest hydrocarbons are alkanes, also known as saturated hydrocarbons or parrafins. All the chemical bonds in alkanes are single bonds. Commonly known alkanes include methane, ethane and butane.

Hydrocarbons that contain one or more double bonds are called alkenes. This group includes propene, also known as propylene.

Alkynes and hydrocarbons with one or more triple bonds, including ethyne (acetylene).
9. Three of the following are bones in the human body. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: chasuble

The scapula is the technical name for the shoulder blade. The fibula is the thinner of the two bones in the lower leg, and the mandible is the jaw bone.

A chasuble is a sleeveless outer vestment worn by Catholic priests (and some ministers of other Christian denominations) during mass.
10. Three of these groups of animals are mammals. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Frogs

Mammals are a broad animal class that share a number of characteristics including having vertebrae, hair and/or fur, three middle ear bones, a neocortex in the brain, and mammary glands in females.
