The plane carrying the US team crashed in Belgium en route to the event. Among those on board was reigning US champion and heavily favored women's skater Laurence Owen. It wasn't until the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France that the US team fully recovered from the tragedy.

In 2003, Sorenstam became the first woman to play in a men's PGA event since Zaharias did so in 1945.

Garrett had the longest pro career of these three Heisman winners, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1966-70 and the San Diego Chargers from 1970-73. He was named Athletic Director at his alma mater USC in 1993.
