Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first match of the semi-finals took place on July 4, 2006. In it, the Italians faced the highly favored Germans. In which city was the game played?

Answer: Dortmund

Dortmund is a city of approximately 590 000 people, and their stadium has a capacity of 65,000 people. The stadium hadn't been built specifically for the tournament like some had been, but it was rather renovated to accommodate 2006 FIFA World Cup regulations.
2. The very first match of the semi-finals was between the homeside, Germany, and an old rival, Italy. It was a hard-fought game, but in the end, one side needed to win. Italy won the game by a score of 2-0. In what sort of a time span were those two goals scored?

Answer: 2 minutes

After the game remained at a standstill through 119 minutes of play, the Italians turned on the heat with one minute to go, including stoppage time. In that short span, the Italians upset the home team by a shattering 2-0 defeat with goals by Del Piero and Grosso.
3. Which Italian player scored the first goal against Germany, the goal that would eventually become the game winner?

Answer: Fabio Grosso

Fabio Grosso's goal was originally off a corner kick. The German keeper, Lehmann, punted the ball away to Pirlo who then passed it to Grosso. With a virtually open net, all he had to do was smash the ball and it would surely be a goal. Del Piero scored the 2nd goal just seconds later on a breakaway.
4. In which period of the game were the two Italian goals scored?

Answer: Second half extra time

In the first half of regulation, both Germany and Italy had their fair share of shots on goal. From the outset, it was obvious which team was the stronger of the two. Germany had merely 2 shots on target in the entire 120 minutes they played, whereas the Italians had 10 shots on goal, 2 of which found the back of the net in roughly a minute.
5. The second match of the semi-finals was played between France and Portugal. In what German city did they play?

Answer: Munich

Munich is a city in Germany with a population of around 1.3 million people. Its stadium was built specifically for the FIFA World Cup. It has a maximum capacity of 66,000 people, a capacity which was easily reached for the game.
6. The Portugal versus France game was so even throughout that it was difficult to believe that there would ever be any scoring. In the end, France won the game by what score?

Answer: 1-0

Leading up to, and immediately after the single goal, the game was at a stalemate, with no team producing anything. It can't be said that neither side had any chances because they did have 17 shots combined. The only breakthrough came off a foolish play by Portugal's defender Carvalho.
7. The game winning goal in the France/Portugal game was scored by which all-star French player?

Answer: Zinedine Zidane

After Carvalho tripped Thierry Henry in the box, a penalty shot was awarded to the opposing side. The man selected to take the kick was the man in the golden boots, Zinedine Zidane. Zidane made no mistake and drilled a low-right shot into the net, just barely hitting it past the keeper. The goal turned out to be the breakthrough needed to win the game.
8. The game winning goal in the France/Portugal was rather shattering because of the circumstances under which it was scored. What was the reason for the goal?

Answer: It was a penalty shot

The incident that occurred was between Carvalho and Thierry Henry. Trying to get the ball, Carvalho put out his foot, but it was a badly timed attempt that missed the ball but caught Henry's ankles and took him down. The referee took no argument and gave a penalty shot which ended up being the lone goal in the game.
9. Who was the goals leader after the end of the semi-finals?

Answer: Miroslav Klose

With a tally of 5 goals, the German striker maintained his goals standing, even if he and his team were shut down by the resilient Italians. Zidane ended the semi-finals with 2 goals, Crespo left with 3, and Cristiano Ronaldo ended with 1 goal. Zinedine Zidane was the only one of these players to have not had his team eliminated before and including the semi-finals.
10. In total, how many goals were amassed in the semi-final stage of the tournament?

Answer: 3

The Italy/Germany game had 2 goals, and the France/Portugal game had 1 goal.
