Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A monumental upset occurred in women's water polo, when the number one ranked USA team lost in the gold medal game to the 9th ranked team. Who was this team, whose inspired play forced the USA women to settle for the silver medal?

Answer: Netherlands

The Netherlands scored a tie-breaking goal in the last minute of play, to win 9-8 over the heavily-favored USA team.
2. Which Jamaican sprinter won both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, earning the unofficial title of "world's fastest man"?

Answer: Usain Bolt

The amazing Bolt became the first man ever to break the world record for both the 100-meter dash *and* the 200-meter dash at the same Olympics. He accomplished this even though he slowed up and started celebrating before the end of the 100-meter event!
3. Which team dropped the baton in both the men's *and* women's 4x100-meter relay?

Answer: USA

What is so inexplicable is that both of these dropped batons occurred in preliminary races, in situations in which the USA was assured of qualifying for the finals if it just made a clean and safe handoff.
4. A huge upset occurred when the USA women lost the gold medal game in softball. Who beat them?

Answer: Japan

Japan won 3-1, snapping the USA's 22-game winning streak. So dominant had the USA team been that they had outscored their opposition 108-3 in the previous two Olympics!
5. Where were the equestrian events held?

Answer: Hong Kong

As sometimes happens, the horses could not get into the host country and the equestrian competition then has to be held elsewhere. For example, the equestrian events for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics were held in Sweden!
6. What controversy dogged the Chinese women's gymnastics team during this Olympics?

Answer: allegations that 3 of the competitors were underage

The rules say a competitor has to turn 16 in the year of the Olympics, and the 3 Chinese gymnasts were said to be only 14. However, they were allowed to compete after a cursory "investigation" by the IOC, which consisted of checking the passports of the gymnasts in question.
7. Which team won the most boxing medals?

Answer: Cuba

Cuba won 8 boxing medals, but oddly, none was a gold. The usually-powerful United States won only a single bronze medal.
8. Which team won the most overall gold medals?

Answer: China

China won 51 golds to the USA's 36.
9. Which team won the most overall medals?

Answer: United States

The United States won 110 to China's 100. China's total represents a 59% increase from the 63 won in 2004. The host country usually gets a boost of around 10-15% in medals won, but a model developed by economists Andrew B. Bernard and Meghan R. Busse, which predicts Olympic medal results based solely on economic factors, correctly predicted that China would have this huge increase in medals, based on its economic successes of the 1990s and 2000s.
10. No quiz on the 2008 Olympics would be complete without a mention of the great Michael Phelps, who set a record for gold medals won at a single Olympics. How many did he win?

Answer: 8

Phelps won all 8 of the events he competed in, to break the record of Mark Spitz, who had 7 in 1972.
