1. Stage 1 was a Team Time Trial. Who won it?

Answer: Slipstream

Christian Vandevelde claimed the maglia rosa, in English that means pink jersey. Slipstream just edged out Team CSC and Team High Road for the victory by six seconds. This was Christian's first-ever leaders jersey in a Grand Tour. It was also the first time an American had worn the maglia rosa since Andy Hammsten in 1988.

Riccardo Riccò of Saunier Duval-Scott won the sprint finish. Although Riccardo would win the stage, he wouldn't take the lead. Christian would lose the maglia rosa to Franco Pellizotti of Liquigas by just one second.

Both riders rode for Team CSC and were from Australia. The two riders were Stuart O'Grady and Bradly McGee. Franco Pellizotti would hold on to his lead in the Giro, thus retaining the maglia rosa.
