Fabian Cancellara won the prologue. Fabian rode for Team CSC. Fabian is also the World Time Trial Champion. That win would also give him the overall lead in the 2008 Tour of California. Bradley Wiggins of Team High Road placed second in the prologue, thus giving him second place overall.

Fabian had his arms raised to signify that his still would maintain his leader's jersey. His teammate Juan José Haedo, also of Team CSC, won the stage. Fabian would hold a lead of two seconds over Tyler Farrar. Tyler rode for Slipstream-Chipotle.
