California Chrome won the derby with a stirring stretch run, about two lengths ahead of hard charging Commanding Curve. The race was the colt's fifth straight win with new jockey, Victor Espinoza (he replaced Alberto Degrado). He was the first California bred horse to win the race since 1962 when Decidely won it.
The race was the colt's seventh career win in 11 starts.
