Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did the Spurs defeat to win the 2014 NBA title?

Answer: Miami Heat

2014 was the fourth year in a row for the Heat to be in the finals. Led by Lebron James, they were attempting to win for the third straight year. The Spurs had other plans as they beat Miami in five games and earned redemption after losing to the Heat in the 2013 finals.
2. Who was the coach that led the Spurs to their 5th title since 1999?

Answer: Gregg Popovich

Gregg Popovich was almost a spy instead of a coach. He graduated from the Air Force Academy with a degree in Soviet Studies. He then decided to coach with the Air Force team instead of becoming a spook.
3. Frenchman Boris Diaw contributed quality minutes as a backup center. Which All-Star point guard for the team hails from France?

Answer: Tony Parker

Formerly married to "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria, Parker began his career with the Spurs at the age of 18 in 2001. The winner of the 2007 NBA finals MVP award, he is known for his hard-charging drives into the lane against much taller players.
4. Which native Argentinian came off the bench to provide valuable minutes for the Spurs?

Answer: Manu Ginobili

A multiple All-Star and NBA Sixth Man of the Year winner in 2008, few teams had such a dynamic player as Ginobili as a reserve. In addition, Manu won a gold medal with Argentina in the 2004 Summer Olympics. He started his pro career in Europe and won a title there as well.
5. The cornerstone of the franchise for many years, which Spurs' player grew up in the U.S. Virgin Islands?

Answer: Tim Duncan

Originally a competitive swimmer, a hurricane destroyed Duncan's pool on the islands. He switched to basketball and now has five NBA titles and two NBA MVP awards.
6. Which player from California ended up as the 2014 Finals MVP in only his third year in the league?

Answer: Kawhi Leonard

Leonard helped the Spurs win the title by playing tough defense against Lebron James in the finals. What's one secret to his success? How about hands that are 9.75 inches long!
7. The two players from Down Under- While Aron Baynes rarely saw playing time, which fellow countryman provided a sharp, three pointer threat off the bench?

Answer: Patty Mills

Mills is the first Indigenous Australian to win an NBA title. His accurate three point shooting helped the Spurs all season, but especially in the playoffs when the starter Tony Parker was not always healthy.
8. What Brazilian big man provided a large presence for the Spurs as their center?

Answer: Tiago Splitter

Splitter came to the Spurs after playing professional basketball in Spain for several years.
9. Marco Belinelli is a foreign born player for the Spurs. What is his home country?

Answer: Italy

After playing for Golden State, Toronto, New Orleans, and Chicago in previous seasons, he decided to play in San Antonio. The choice paid off for Belinelli as he is now an NBA champion. He is another great three point shooter.
10. These four players are from the USA. Which one is known as the "Red Rocket"?

Answer: Matt Bonner

With his bright red hair it's hard to miss Bonner on the court. However, the best player from the choices is Green. He started for the Spurs for the majority of the season and the playoffs.
